Chapter 256: I Can’t Let Him Go

Vanessa

The words are still there… They don’t go away, they don’t soften, they don’t fade… They repeat

themselves, over and over.

You’re a whore… You’re only good for sex…

I slam my apartment door shut, but it’s not enough. Because I’m not running from him, I’m running from what he said. And from what… deep down… I fear is true.

I wander aimlessly around the living room, tossing my purse anywhere. I carelessly kick off my heels, I breathe. But the air doesn’t flow properly. My chest feels tight, as if something is suffocating me from the inside.

“No…” I bring a hand to my face, and then it happens. The tears flow uncontrollably, without pause. They fall one after another, fast, hot, inevitable. “No… no…”

I collapse onto the sofa, and I cry. Not elegantly, not restrained. I cry like someone who’s

broken inside. Because it wasn’t just what he said, it was how he said it. It was that he didn’t

hesitate, it was that he believed it. And worse still… it was that a part of me… felt it was true.

I pick up the phone, not thinking too much. I don’t want to think, I just need… to feel something different. To feel a little company, because I’m going crazy.

Marco, Carlos… Who is it?

“Hello?”

“Come here.”

My voice cracks.

“What happened?”

“Just… come here.”

I hang up, I don’t explain, I can’t. Fifteen minutes, that’s how long it takes. Fifteen minutes in which I don’t stop crying. In which I try to pull myself together and I can’t, in which that phrase comes back again and again.

You’re only good for sex…

The doorbell rings, I wipe my face with my hands. I open the door, Carlos is there. Worried… Always available, always easy, always…

I don’t let him finish, I take his face in my hands. And I kiss him. Desperate, without thinking, without measuring. Just… wanting to erase something.

I pull him inside.

“Vanessa…”

“Don’t speak.”

I don’t want words, I don’t want questions. I just want… not to feel this.

“Hold me…”

My voice trembles.

“Touch me… please…”

His hands encircle me, and for a second… just a second… I try to lose myself. I try to convince myself that this is enough, that this fills me up, that this… works. But no, it doesn’t

work.

My mind doesn’t shut down, my body is there… but I’m not. And then it comes back. Stronger,

crueler.

That’s why no man wants anything serious with you…

I pull away abruptly.

“No.”

Carlos stands still, confused.

“What’s wrong?”

I shake my head, stepping back.

“No… I can’t.”

“Vanessa…”

“Go away!”

My voice comes out louder than I expected.

“What?”

Chapter 256: I Can’t Let Him Go

“Go away!”

I push him toward the door.

“Now.”

“But…

“GO AWAY!”

I practically drag him out of the apartment, slamming the door shut.

Silence, again, but now it hurts more. Much more.

I slide down the door until I’m sitting on the floor.

My legs give way, my chest breaks again. And I cry… louder, deeper.

“I can’t…” The words come out between sobs. “I can’t let you go…”

I cover my face.

“I don’t want to…”

My voice cracks.

“I don’t want to do it…”

Because that’s the truth, the only truth I can’t deny. Alexander can decide, he can let go, he can say he’s not interested and move on with his life. Not me, I can’t. Because Ethan isn’t just a man to me, he’s an obsession, a habit, a need that has seeped into every part of my life. And even though he’s destroying me… even though he’s humiliating me… even though he’ll never be mine… I don’t know how to let him go. And that… that’s what scares me the most.

The crying doesn’t stop immediately, it subsides little by little, like a storm that doesn’t disappear… it just runs its course.

I take a breath, then another. I dry my face with my hands, but it’s useless. The tears are still there, stuck, as if they don’t want to leave.

I force myself to get up, my legs feel heavy. My body… even more so. I walk to the kitchen without thinking too much, I open the cupboard. I grab a bottle, pour a generous swig. I bring it to my lips and drink; it burns, but I need it, I need to feel something different from this

I walk to the mirror, look at myself. And for a second… I don’t recognize myself. Red eyes, smudged makeup, a broken expression.

I run my fingers under my eyes, wiping away the traces of tears, take another deep breath, and another. I straighten my shoulders, lift my chin slightly. As if that were enough to pull myself together, as if I could rebuild myself with just posture.

“You must be okay…”

My voice is low, raspy, but firm in what it tries to be. I look directly at myself, without looking

away.

“You have to go back to the office tomorrow.”

I pause, take another sip.

“You’ll be able to see him…”

My reflection doesn’t respond, but I do. Because I know what it means, because I know why I’m still here. Because I know that, even though it hurts… even though it breaks me… I haven’t

given up, not yet.
