Silence fell between us immediately, the elegant sounds of the restaurant disappearing around me. Only he and I existed.

Alexander didn’t speak, didn’t even blink. And that infuriated me even more, because he was still acting as if he were in control.

“What did you want?” I continued, feeling the anger rising inside me. “Buy time? Prove the company needs you? Prove that without you everything falls apart?”

His jaw tightened slightly, but he still didn’t answer.

I let out a disbelieving laugh.

“You almost screwed everything up.”

I saw his eyes harden slightly.

“Clara…”

“No,” I interrupted him immediately. “Let me speak now.”

My chest rose and fell rapidly. I’d been keeping this inside for too many days. Too many days pretending everything was normal, too many days looking at that man and wondering if he was really capable of doing something like that. And now that I was standing in front of him

all the disappointment was exploding inside me.

I leaned forward slightly.

“The elevator thing…”

My voice came out colder, more bitter.

“Your elevator scene… let me tell you, it was wonderful.”

I clapped slowly, ironically.

Alexander’s eyes fixed on me, hard, intense. But I wasn’t going to back down now.

“You must have had a lot of fun, didn’t you?” I continued with a smile dripping with rage. Seeing me all worked up in the middle of that shit…”

I let out a small, humorless laugh.

“What did you think? That I was going to run into your arms after that? That you were going to make me believe you were my hero?”

Alexander slowly placed his glass on the table. And for the first time since lunch began… he stopped looking calm.

“You don’t know what you’re talking about.”

“Of course I do.”

“No.”

His voice was harsher now, more dangerous.

“You have no idea what really happened.”

I laughed again.

“Then explain to me why the engineer said he warned you that elevator shouldn’t be used.” That’s when I saw him tense up… Just for a second. But I saw it, and that was enough. Because I understood that I had hit the nail on the head.

My eyes began to burn, not with sadness. With rage.

“I trusted you…”

The words came out on their own, and for the first time, something akin to guilt crossed Alexander’s face. Very quickly, almost imperceptibly. But it was there.

“Clara…”

“I don’t understand how you could do something like that.”

My voice lowered slightly, more hurt, more human.

“If the project sank… you sank too. Why on earth would you do something like that?”

Alexander held my gaze for several long seconds. And then he spoke with a calmness that made me feel even worse.

“I have my reasons, Clara.”

I frowned.

What?

My breath barely caught. And he continued to look at me with that intense gaze he always had when he was serious.

“Do you think I don’t know what you’re trying to do?”

My throat tightened.

“That doesn’t justify…”

“I know.”

He interrupted me firmly.

“I know perfectly well.”

Silence fell between us again, but now it was different. Heavier, more intimate, more dangerous. Because for the first time, A

Alexander didn’t seem like the perfectly controlled man I knew… He seemed exhausted, on the edge. And that frightened me more than anything else.

The atmosphere between us changed completely after that. The table was still immaculate. The silverware perfectly aligned. The glasses sparkling in the dim light of the restaurant. The waiters walked around as if nothing was happening, but I felt the air had grown heavy… Hard

to breathe.

Alexander stared at me from across the table, not seeming nervous. That was the worst part. There was no obvious guilt on his face. No desperation. Just that cold calm he always had when something spiraled out of control, and yet he still managed to keep the situation under

control.

I slowly leaned back in my chair.

“Aren’t you going to say anything?” I finally asked.

Alexander let out a low laugh. One that immediately irritated me.

“What do you want me to say, Clara?”

“The truth.”

He barely nodded.

“The truth is a complicated word.”

I looked at him incredulously.

“Complicated?”

“Yes. Because you’ve already decided what you want to believe.”

“I don’t need to believe anything. I have proof.”

His eyes locked onto mine, and for the first time since that conversation began, I saw something different in him.
