Chapter 277: A Distraction.
Alexander
The silence in my apartment was becoming unbearable. New York was silent today, and that silence was killing me, because it made me hear my own thoughts.
I loosened my tie roughly as I paced back and forth.
Hale… Clara… The meeting… The evidence.
“The damn evidence.”
I ran a hand over my face and let out a heavy sigh.
No, no… She didn’t have anything truly solid. Nothing that could destroy me. I tried to repeat that to myself over and over, as if it would calm me down. Because Clara was intelligent, yes, but also emotional. And when someone acts on emotion, they often make mistakes. I hadn’t left any loose ends. I couldn’t have.
I went into the bathroom and turned on the shower forcefully. The water began to fall as I slowly took off my clothes. I needed to clear my head, to think clearly. That was it, nothing
more.
I stepped under the hot water and closed my eyes for just a few seconds. But she was back, Clara. Her voice in the restaurant,
“I know you were involved in what happened in Boston.”
I clenched my jaw, shit. She’s trying to intimidate me, that’s it… there’s no way she can… Or is there?
“Damn it…” She had looked at me as if she didn’t know me anymore, as if I were someone despicable.
I placed both hands against the shower wall and let my head fall for a moment.
“You have nothing…” I muttered to myself. “You can’t prove anything.”
Because even if I had found some emails… some documents… that wouldn’t really prove that
I had caused everything. I could handle it, I could fix it. I always fixed things.
The insistent ringing of my phone interrupted my thoughts, and I frowned.
I wasn’t planning on answering anyone, but the phone rang again. And again… And again.

Vanessa.
I let out a dry laugh, of course. Who else could call with such persistence?
The screen displayed several missed calls, messages, persistent calls. I almost ignored the call again. But honestly… I needed to disconnect from all of this for a while. From Clara, from Hale, from the meeting… From that damned feeling of losing control.
I finally swiped my finger across the screen.
“What do you want, Vanessa?”
There was a brief silence before she spoke.
“Why the hell aren’t you answering my calls anymore? Don’t you want to talk to me anymore?”
Her voice sounded different, softer than usual.
I leaned against the wet shower wall and closed my eyes.
“No. You know it…”
She took a few seconds to answer.
“I want to talk to you, Alexander.”
I let out a bitter laugh.
“About what?”
“A lot of things.”
“Does it have to do with them?”
She didn’t answer right away. And that was enough to give me the answer.
Vanessa sighed on the other end.
“Alexander…” “You know what?”
I interrupted.
“Come to the apartment.”
She was silent for a moment. And then she asked more quietly: “Now?”
“Yes.”
