Chapter 289 Body on Fire
“Answer me.”
“I crossed the line first…”
“I don’t care.”
My voice comes out harsher than I intended. I gently cup her face, forcing her to look at me.
“Did he do anything to you?”
Her eyes fill with tears again. And then she says it.
“He grabbed my arms… he pushed me… I hit my back on the desk and fell to the floor… then he left
For a second, the world goes completely silent.
My blood starts to boil, literally. I feel fury rising through my body in a brutal, dark, dangerous way.
“That son of a bitch…”
Clara tries to take my hand.
“Ethan…”
But I’ve already gotten out of bed with her still in my arms. I need to see her, I need to check. My
hands tremble with rage as I grab the hem of her robe. She immediately understands what I’m
going to do.
“It’s not that bad…”
“Let me see.”
“No, it’s nothing… I…”
I pull the robe down over her shoulders. And when I see her back…
Something inside me breaks.
Her white skin has a purplish mark extending near her side. A clear, real… severe bruise.
My breathing becomes heavy, very heavy.
I run my fingers just above, the mark without touching it completely, because I know it must hurt
her. And because I’m trying not to completely lose control.
“He did this to you…”
My voice comes out hoarse, low. Dangerously calm. Clara quickly straightens her robe,
embarrassed.

Chapter 288 Body on Fire
“It was an accident…”
I look at her immediately.
“Don’t you ever justify it again.”
She remains silent, and that infuriates me even more. Because even now… even while crying…
she’s still trying to protect Alexander.
I run a hand over my face, I take a few steps across the room trying to catch my breath. But I can’t,
I can’t get the image of her falling out of my head… Crying, alone. While that jerk laid his hands on
her.
“I’m going to kill him.”
Clara stands up immediately.
“No.”
“No?”
I stare at her in disbelief.
“You want me to stay quiet after this?”
“It was an argument, Ethan…”
“He pushed you!”
My voice is louder than usual, and she jumps. The moment I see that, I close my eyes for a second,
trying to control myself. I’m not angry with her, but I’m filled with rage. A rage so intense that I can
barely think straight.
I move closer again.
I cup her face in my hands, more gently now.
“Listen to me carefully,” I murmur. “No man has the right to touch you like that. None.”
She starts crying again. And seeing her like this destroys me even more.
I pull her close to my chest.
“I should have cut him out of our lives a long time ago…”
“Ethan…”
“No. It’s over.”
My voice is cold this time, resolute.

Chapter 289: Body on Fire, Part 2.
Ethan
“I provoked it…” The words escape her lips through sobs. And something inside me explodes.
I immediately take her arms and gently pull her away from my chest to look at her.
“What did you just say?”
Clara lowers her gaze.
“Ethan…”
“No. No, Clara.” I gently force her to look at me, my breathing still heavy. Rage is still burning me
She tries to speak, but I don’t let her.
“Did you provoke him to screw everything up in Boston? Did you provoke him to tamper with
documents? Did you provoke him to put you in a broken elevator?”
Her eyes fill with tears again.
“You didn’t provoke that,” I say firmly. “He did.”
Clara swallows hard.
“Don’t try to justify it.”
She closes her eyes for a second. And when she opens them again… they look exhausted. Completely exhausted.
“I just want it all to be over…”
Her voice comes out broken, small.
“I don’t want any more chaos, Ethan.”
I watch her without saying anything.
“He did things for me, yes… he helped me in my career… he helped the company… we worked together for years…”
She pauses.
“We’re even.”
My jaw clenches again.

Chapter 289 Body on Fie, Part 2
“I don’t want any more of him. More arguments. More problems… More tension… I just want him to
leave… please.”
I slowly let go of her, take a step back. I need space. Because my head is burning, my blood is boiling, as if my body were on fire with anger. Because a part of me wants to leave this room right now, get in the car, and smash Alexander’s face in with my bare hands And the worst part…! feel
like I wouldn’t regret it.
I walk toward the door. But before I reach it, Clara grabs my arm. I look at her; her eyes are filled
with fear. Not fear of me, fear of what I might do.
“Please… don’t do anything.”
She squeezes my arm slightly.
“Let’s just let him go.”
And then I remember the mark on her back, the way she cried. The way she said she fell to the ground. The fury rises again, so strong that I have to close my eyes for a second to control myself.
