Chapter 311: Something’s Not Right.
Clara
The day starts like any other, and perhaps that’s why… I don’t notice anything different at first.
I’m sitting at my desk, reviewing some reports Howard left me early this morning. His/return to the company has been… curious. Efficient, as always, but now there’s something more to the way he works. As if he needs to prove, more than ever, that he deserves to be here.
And I don’t blame him; I brought it on myself.
I gently press my lips together as I turn the page of the document. There are still things to adjust, details to finalize, but for the first time in a long time… I feel like everything is in order.
The company is running smoothly… And I… I’m thinking about other things.
My hand unconsciously slides down to my stomach, barely touching it through the fabric of my blouse. A baby… The idea no longer frightens me.
Before, it seemed distant, even foreign… but now… now it feels like something possible. I smile
slightly.
“Miss Sinclair,” my assistant’s voice pulls me from my thoughts.
I look up.
“Yes?”
“You have a call in fifteen minutes with the Boston team. They’ve already confirmed.”
I nod.
“Perfect, thank you.”
She hesitates for another second in the doorway, as if she’s about to say something… but in the end, she just nods and leaves.
I return to my papers, and silence settles back into the office. Everything is… quiet… Too quiet.
I don’t know exactly how much time passes. I was in the boardroom with my team and then came back… it wasn’t long, maybe twenty or twenty-five minutes, maybe less…
I entered my office so engrossed in reading a clause that I’m not noticing anything around me, not
even that the door was already open, or anything to indicate that someone has entered.
凹
Something’s Not Right.
That’s why, when I look up… it’s already there.
The bouquet.
My body remains completely still, perched on one of the corners of my desk, perfectly positioned, as if it had always been there.
White roses… The same ones, exactly the same.
I feel something small, almost imperceptible, tighten in my chest.
I blink once, then again. My gaze shifts from the bouquet to the door…
I frown, and that’s when I realize the door wasn’t closed.
“But…?”
I walk slowly

The frowns.
Come in? No one… not that I saw.”
I watch her for a few seconds; she doesn’t seem to be lying.
“No one left… anything?”
She shakes her head.

“No, ma’am. While I was with you in the boardroom, no one announced anything from reception:
Silence stretches between us; I nod slowly.
“Okay… thank you.”
I close the door, this time more carefully, more slowly.
I stand there for a few seconds, staring at the doorknob, as if waiting for it to turn on its own.
But nothing’s wrong, absolutely nothing.
I go back to my desk, the bouquet is still there. Perfect, untouched. As if it didn’t belong with the

ed to justify the presence of that bouquet in my office… someone entering this place.
t in the midst of that, another hard question arises… Why always white? Why nameless?
Why… like this?
My mind searches for logical answers, someone from the company, a client.
Yes… that would make sense, but then… Why didn’t anyone announce anything?
My gaze scans the office, as if I might suddenly find something out of place.
Everything is in its place, everything… except this.
I exhale slowly.
“You’re exaggerating,” I tell myself.
And perhaps it’s true, it’s been an intense few weeks. The wedding, the trip, the return, the
accumulated work, the medical checkups, soon it will be the opening in Boston. It’s normal that my
mind is… more sensitive… More alert, more… Susceptible.
I take the bouquet in both hands; it’s light. Too light for the feeling it evokes.
I walk to one of the side tables and look for a vase. I fill it with water and carefully arrange the
