Chapter 336 My Blank Mind, Part 1

Chapter 336: My Blank Mind, Part 1.

Clara

The ceiling is the first thing I see every time I open my eyes. White… too white.

I blink slowly, as if my eyes haven’t quite adjusted to the light. Everything feels… strange. I couldn’t explain it clearly, but it’s as if my body is here… and my mind, a little further back.

Every time I wake up, it feels like the first time.

A second late, I breathe, and that simple act feels… heavy. As if I haven’t done it in a long time.

I barely move my fingers… and I feel something, a pressure. I turn my head slightly and see her. My mother… She’s sitting next to me, her head resting near the bed, her hand holding mine tightly, as if she’s afraid I might disappear or leave at any moment.

She’s been here since I opened my eyes.

I watch her for a few seconds; she looks tired. Very tired.

More than I remember seeing her before, I frown slightly.

Why is she like this? I try to speak… but my throat burns.

“Mmm…”

The sound is weak, barely a whisper. But it’s enough.

My mother stirs, her head jerking up, as if she hadn’t really been asleep, just waiting. Her eyes open

and when she sees me…

She freezes completely.

“Clara…”

She says it as if she’s unsure, as if saying my name might break something.

She blinks several times, moves closer.

“Clara…” she repeats, her voice now cracking. “Did you rest?”

I nod slightly, slowly, confused. And then… she cries, but it’s not a soft cry.

held back for a long time that suddenly breaks.

“This doesn’t seem real…”

“Why…?” I try to speak, but my voice comes out weak. “Why are you crying?”

She shakes her head, trying to compose herself.

“It’s nothing… it’s nothing… it’s just, God… I’d almost lost all hope.”

O

Everything about her screams that it’s nothing.

“I’m…” I swallow. “I’m a little tired of this bed.”

I look around and then; the machines, the wires. The constant sound of a monitor.

Hospital… I don’t want to be here anymore.

“I’m still trying to remember, what happened… What happened?”

My mother looks at me and that look… It unsettles me, because there’s something about it.

Something I don’t understand.

“Don’t strain yourself, the memories will come back little by little… You were in a bad accident, my love… you have to give your body a chance.”

Accident. The word that’s been swirling in my head since I woke up.

I try to find something, an image… a memory.

But there’s nothing, just… emptiness.

“I don’t remember…” I whisper.

My mother squeezes my hand tighter.

“It’s normal… calm down…”

She doesn’t sound convinced, and that makes me even more nervous.

Before I can say anything else, the door opens.

A nurse comes in and stops when she sees me.

“She’s awake from her nap,” she says quickly. “I’ll let the doctor know.”

She leaves almost immediately, and within minutes, the room starts to fill up.

Doctors, voices, movement… Too much.

I feel overwhelmed every time they gather around me like this.

“Relax, Clara,” one of them says. “We’re just going to ask you a few questions, okay?”

I nod, even though I’m not sure I want to.

He moves a little closer.

“Can you tell me your full name?”

I look at him.

That’s easy.

“Clara… Sinclair.”

He nods.

“Very good. Do you know how old you are?”

“Twent…” I look at my mother… I’m not sure anymore. As far as I understand, my memory forgot a period of my life, but I don’t know how long. “Well, I think I should check that now, don’t you?”

The doctor gives a small smile and nods.

“Do you know what you do for a living?”

“Well…” I pause. “As far as I remember, I’m creating a project… I’m not sure, I only remember a draft of a project that I want to lead independently.”

The words come out naturally, effortlessly.

The doctors exchange glances.

“Perfect,” says another. “Do you know what city you’re in?”

“We’re in…” I look around. “New York. That view gives me the answer,” I say, pointing to the bedroom window.

A brief silence, then they write something down.

“Very good, Clara… that’s excellent.”

1 frown.

“Excellent?”

My voice is firmer now.

“What’s going on?”

They look at each other. And one of them steps forward.
