Riley smiled. "Alright, I'll go with you."
Half an hour later, inside a dessert shop at a local mall.
Riley and Winona sat by the window. The server placed their order on the table: two delicate pastries and two large sundaes.
Winona eagerly scooped a spoonful of ice cream into her mouth. The icy chill made her eyes flutter shut in absolute bliss. "So good! Riley, you have to try it."
Riley watched Winona's adorable expression and offered a soft smile. "I will."
After a few bites, having temporarily satisfied her craving, Winona looked at Riley with a gossip-hungry gleam in her eyes. "Riley, what do you think of Sebastian?"
Riley's spoon paused in mid-air. Her mind involuntarily flashed back to the moment she had pinned Sebastian against the sofa, and the tips of her ears flushed pink. But she quickly banished the image from her thoughts.
After a moment's consideration, she answered earnestly, "He's a really good person. He's not at all as cold and ruthless as the rumors make him out to be."
Winona curled her lip and muttered, "He's not a good person at all. He's just a deeply calculating, sly fox."
Riley didn't catch the mutter. "What did you say?"
Winona shook her head. "Nothing. As long as you think he's great, that's all that matters."
What did she mean, as long as she thought he was great?
Riley felt as if Winona might be misunderstanding something.
She decided she needed to clear the air. "Sebastian is Alora's uncle, and Pierce asked him to keep an eye on us. He values family and keeps his promises. Ever since Alora and I moved to Statenbury, he really has taken great care of us. That's why I say he's a good person."
Winona rested her chin in her hands, looking at Riley with deep intrigue. "How exactly has he taken care of you and Alora?"
