Sebastian looked deeply into Riley's eyes, his voice low and solemn. "Alora is family. Both you and Alora are very important to me."

Riley's eyes flickered.

That didn't sound right.

How was Alora his family? She had the Landon family blood running through her veins. But then again, he was raised by the Landons, so considering her family made sense.

It turned out he was still honoring his adoptive family's grace, keeping his promise to Pierce to take good care of her and Alora. Her sudden avoidance must have made him worry that something had happened to her.

"Alora and I are perfectly fine. You don't need to worry."

Seeing her calm reaction, the tension drained from Sebastian's nerves. A faint, self-deprecating smile touched his lips. In her heart, he was still just Alora's uncle.

Riley stared at the floor and began weaving a lie. "I just didn't want to keep being a burden to you. If we see each other less, there will naturally be less trouble for you."

Sebastian looked at the top of her head. He had a strong feeling she still wasn't telling the truth, but apart from that excuse, he truly couldn't think of any other reason. "I've told you before, your matters are never a burden."

Riley recalled when she first moved to Statenbury and he had rented her the apartment. He had said the exact same thing back then.

For an uncle, he really had gone above and beyond.

Riley was just about to reply when the motion-sensor lights suddenly flicked off. Out of nowhere, a cat darted across the stairwell with a sharp yowl, its blue eyes glowing eerily in the pitch black.

She jumped, acting on pure reflex, and threw herself straight into Sebastian's arms. "A cat! There's a cat!"

She was terrified of cats, having been badly scratched by one as a child.
