Quinn Logan saw the caller ID and frowned slightly. "Do you two keep in touch often?"
Riley Vance nodded. "He video calls frequently to see Alora. It’s his right as a father. I can’t interfere, and I don't have the authority to stop him."
That made sense. "Go ahead and answer it. I’ll go pour you a glass of water," Quinn said, getting up and heading into the kitchen.
Riley accepted the video call. Pierce Landon appeared on the screen wearing a dark gray silk pajama shirt. He looked like he had just showered, rubbing his damp hair with a towel. "Is Alora asleep?"
"Not yet, it's a bit early for her."
"Let me see her."
"I'm not in Statenbury."
Pierce paused his towel-drying and took a closer look at Riley’s background, realizing it indeed wasn't her place. "Where are you?"
"I came back to Riverport to take care of some things."
A look of pleasant surprise flashed in Pierce’s eyes. "When did you get back?"
"Arrived in the evening."
"How long are you staying?"
Riley frowned slightly. "That’s my private business. I don’t think I need to report to you."
The research would take several days, and she didn't want to get tangled up with Pierce.
Pierce was silent for two seconds. "...I didn't mean to pry into your personal affairs. I just bought some things for Alora. I was originally planning to go to Statenbury in the next few days, but since you're back, let me know when you're free. We can have dinner together, and I'll give you the stuff."
Riley thought for a moment and said, "Let's skip dinner. We can just pick a place to meet tomorrow."
Pierce frowned. "Riley, you promised we'd interact as friends. When I went to Statenbury, I ate and stayed at your place. Now that you're in Riverport, I should naturally play the host. What kind of friends meet up without even sharing a meal?"
"I have plans tomorrow."
"Even with plans, you still have to eat, right?"
