Suddenly, the phone on the nightstand rang. It was the new phone Pierce had brought her earlier.
Riley picked it up. It was Quinn. As soon as she answered, Quinn's frantic voice burst through the speaker. "Riley, is that you?"
"Yeah."
"You scared me half to death!" Quinn's voice cracked with tears. "Stay right there, I'm coming to the hospital right now."
Warmth flooded Riley's heart. "Okay. Don't rush, drive safe. I'm fine."
About twenty minutes later, Quinn burst in. She looked Riley up and down, and seeing that she was physically intact, the massive weight on her chest finally lifted.
She demanded to know what happened. Why was her phone off? Why did she just vanish?
Riley gave her a brief rundown of the kidnapping and the near-assault. The story terrified Quinn, who hugged Riley tightly, her eyes filled with lingering dread. "Those animals. They deserve to rot in hell."
She pulled back and immediately asked, "Did you call the cops? We have to make sure they're locked away for life!"
Riley shook her head. "No. Blowing this up publicly won't do me any good."
Quinn realized she was right. If word got out that Riley was almost assaulted, the social stigma would be unbearable. "I was just too angry. But are we really just going to let them off the hook?"
"Pierce has them. He said he'll find out who ordered the hit."
Quinn gasped. "It wasn't random? Someone planned this?"
Riley nodded.
"Who would be that malicious?"
