Meanwhile, at a hospital in Riverport.
Beatrice groggily opened her eyes.
Pierce was sitting by her bed. "Mother."
Beatrice stared at him with hollow, empty eyes. "Why did you save me?"
Pierce's expression was laced with guilt. "It's my fault. I failed to consider your feelings. It won't happen again. I'll take proper care of you from now on."
Tears instantly pooled in Beatrice's eyes. "You don't blame me for hurting Riley anymore?"
Pierce sighed helplessly. "It's in the past. No matter what, you are still my mother."
Beatrice shook her head as tears streamed down her cheeks.
It could never be in the past.
When she closed her eyes, her mind was bombarded with the horrific images of that filthy beggar assaulting her. The memory played on an endless, torturous loop, pushing her to the brink of insanity. This was something she could never just 'get over.'
Watching his mother weep silently, Pierce recalled the doctor's grim words, and his chest tightened painfully.
A collapse of reality, absolute shock, humiliation, denial—a hurricane of emotions tore through him.
He pressed his lips together and finally forced the words out. "The doctor said there were signs of sexual intimacy on your body. What exactly happened?"
Beatrice's eyes widened in sheer terror. The color drained from her face, leaving it ash-gray. He knew? They all knew?
A suffocating wave of utter humiliation crashed over her.
She bolted upright in the bed and violently yanked the IV needle out of her hand, scrambling to get out of bed.
