Unable to hold back her annoyance, Holly intentionally raised her voice: “Some people are just jealous of Dr. Vance's talent and noble character, so they talk trash behind her back. Guess that slapped you right in the face, didn't it?”

Lila obviously knew Holly was aiming those words directly at her, but she had no energy to bicker right now. She was terrified Elaine would rat her out.

She hadn't given Elaine her name, so she should be fine, right?

She spent the entire afternoon on edge. Seeing that nothing happened as quitting time approached, she thought she was in the clear. But with just five minutes left on her shift, a police officer appeared at the office door. “Lila Lanning, please come with me.”

Lila was so startled that the medical files she was holding slammed onto the desk with a clatter.

Her colleagues shot confused glances her way, whispering amongst themselves. “What did she do?”

“Why are the cops looking for her?”

Dr. Grosse walked over shortly after. “Lila, don't just sit there. Go.”

Pale as a sheet, Lila kept her head down, stood up, and followed the officer out.

Someone immediately walked up to Dr. Grosse. “Dr. Grosse, what happened with Lila?”

Since the matter wasn't concluded yet, Dr. Grosse didn't reveal anything. “Focus on your own work and stop asking questions.”

Police Station.

Riley had just finished giving her statement in the interrogation room when an officer walked in. “Ms. Vance, someone is here to pick you up. You're free to go.”

“Why does she get to leave?” Elaine tried to stand up, but halfway up, she was forced back into her chair by the officer beside her. “She's the victim and has given her statement, so of course she can leave. If you keep throwing a tantrum and refusing to cooperate, we'll throw you in a holding cell.”

Riley paid no more attention to Elaine and walked out of the room.

Things had reached this point solely because of Elaine's own actions. If Riley didn't teach her a lesson now, she'd likely come back to the hospital to cause another scene.

But the officer said someone was here to pick her up. Who could it be?

For some reason, the first person that popped into Riley's mind was Sebastian.
