A certain Uncle Jack had come by to drop a bombshell about my past, and his son might be involved... well, I still haven't checked the exact dates, but with my recent trip to London and all, my periods have been all over the place, so honestly, I can't say for sure who the father is," Cordelia confessed.
Petra knew full well that Cordelia was talking about Eason. She had overheard Cordelia and Tony chatting in the diner last time. Tony had mentioned that Eason was staying at the Crown Hotel back then.
"You mean to tell me you don't even know who the father is?" Petra gasped, shocked. "Cordelia, I had no idea you were so... so..."
Cordelia just kept her head down, sipping her water before giving a slight nod.
Petra stayed for a little while longer before getting up to leave.
After Petra left, Cordelia thought to herself, she'll probably go running her mouth to Ronan, stirring the pot with something like, "The kid might be Ronan's or might be someone else's."
Serves him right!
Cordelia couldn't wait for the day he'd be fuming with anger. How dare he put her in this awkward "other woman" scenario. Of course, he might not care at all, and if he doesn't, so be it.
Cordelia sat down, leisurely made herself a cup of tea, and sipped away, her mood soaring.
After leaving Cordelia's place, Petra made a beeline for Ronan's.
Ronan was lounging on the couch, a book in hand, but clearly distracted.
His son Callum came over to talk.
"Dad, why hasn't mom been home lately?" Callum climbed onto Ronan's lap.
"What would you say if mom had a little brother or sister for you, would you like that?" Ronan stroked his son's hair.
"Is mom staying away because she's having a baby?" Callum looked up at his father with wide, inquiring eyes.
"Yes," Ronan replied gently. He was contemplating whether to bring Cordelia back home; it worried him, her being alone out there.
"She's almost two months along now. It's normal to feel sick around this time, but it should ease up soon," Petra continued. Since Cordelia herself wasn't sure who the father was, Petra saw an opportunity to sow some seeds of doubt.
"Two months?" Ronan questioned, surprised that it wasn't the one month he had assumed.
"Yeah, that's what Cordelia told me."
Ronan sat back, stroking his chin in thought. Cordelia was pregnant and hadn't come out with it directly; she'd been beating around the bush. And now, with Petra telling him it's been two months, he couldn't help but wonder: could the child really be his?
Two months ago, Eason had been in the States as well.
Without a word, Ronan pulled out a cigarette, lit it, and took a drag, oblivious to Petra coughing from the smoke beside him.
Seeing Ronan's wheels turning, Petra decided not to press further. She had planted the seed of doubt, and that was enough for now.
