The three of them entered The Yates Manor together.
Seeing Madeline arrive with York and Felicity, Seraphina was a little surprised, but a deep smile reached her eyes.-
Felicity had a fragile constitution and couldn't handle drafts, so Seraphina had the staff take her upstairs to change clothes.
Since the three of them had arrived early and most of the guests hadn't shown up yet, Seraphina personally handed each of them a cup of honey grapefruit tea. "I was just about to call Maddy. I didn't expect you all to arrive together."
"We ran into each other outside."
York answered casually.
He hated sweet things. Frowning in distaste, he completely ignored the honey grapefruit tea resting beside his hand.
Seraphina scolded him playfully. "You're so difficult. Look at your wife, she's so easy to please. With you busy out of town these past two years, I would have died of boredom if Maddy hadn't kept me company."
York actually turned to look over.
Madeline had been completely quiet since entering the house. She sat off to the side, sipping her honey grapefruit tea.
Her eyes were cast downward in perfect submission, looking every bit the gentle, compliant wife.
York flicked his cigarette ash, yet his mind flashed back to the times she would grow furious from embarrassment, biting recklessly into his neck with total abandon.
Absolutely vicious.
He looked at Madeline with a half-smile. "Look at what you're saying. Ms. Monroe is famously ladylike."
In the past, whenever he said things like that, Madeline would always get angry.
Now, however, she merely held her tea, calmly looking down at her phone.
Seraphina knew her son's terrible attitude. She turned, taking Madeline's hand with a sigh. "When York first decided to come back, I wanted to tell you. But since it wasn't finalized, I thought it best to keep it quiet. Thank God he's finally back."
"Two years ago, when he wanted to transfer to San Francisco, I was totally against it. What kind of marriage is long-distance? But he's finally back. No matter how big the problem was, two years is enough time to move past it. Maddy, you two need to make this work."
Madeline replied, "These past two years have been perfectly fine."
