"Hurt you? When did I ever hurt you?"
The brigade leader’s wife felt wronged the moment her husband glared at her.
She was only doing this for the brigade leader’s own good.
Leng Yuan’s uncle was a high-ranking official. If her niece married Leng Yuan, they’d all be family.
’How was that hurting him?’
Chen Beiguo got a headache just looking at his wife like this.
He took the broom from her hands and pulled her inside the house.
"We need to have a serious talk about this today."
This was a conversation that needed to happen behind closed doors.
Otherwise, if someone overheard and the news spread, it would seem like he had the same idea.
Once inside, Chen Beiguo lowered his voice. "You want to introduce your sister’s daughter to Leng Yuan, don’t you?"
The brigade leader’s wife nodded, but she was aware of the relationship between Chen Beiguo and Leng Yuan. She quickly explained, "I didn’t say I’d introduce them now. I was just thinking that if Gu Jiaojiao really did leave Leng Yuan, I could introduce them then."
Chen Beiguo sneered.
"Back when Leng Yuan wasn’t married, did you think it was because he couldn’t find a wife? No, it was because his standards were too high, and he looked down on his options."
"Your sister’s daughter is just average-looking, her skin isn’t fair, and she’s never been to school. Is there a single thing about her that compares to Gu Jiaojiao? Forget comparing—even if Gu Jiaojiao wasn’t in the picture, do you think Leng Yuan would even look at a girl like that?"
The brigade leader’s wife was so thoroughly refuted she couldn’t say a word.
’Besides, Leng Yuan and Gu Jiaojiao are still married. They haven’t even divorced yet.’
’Even if they did divorce, he wouldn’t be interested in someone like her.’
Fearing his wife would do something foolish, Chen Beiguo continued, "His uncle is a high-ranking official, even higher than the county magistrate. Do you think his uncle wouldn’t introduce his own nephew to a better match? Why would he have to marry your sister’s daughter?"
"Just tell me, if it were you, who would you choose?"
The brigade leader’s wife was left completely speechless.
She glanced at the brigade leader, whose neck was red with agitation, and felt a sense of exasperation.
"Alright, alright, I get your point. I just won’t mention it again, okay?"
The brigade leader’s wife said sourly.
"With such a powerful uncle, who wouldn’t be eager to get close? Tell me, how come you don’t have a high-ranking official for an uncle?"
Chen Beiguo was speechless.
Not long after the brigade leader left Leng Yuan’s house, there was a knock at the courtyard gate. Sweet Girl ran to open it, and upon seeing the postman, she quickly shouted toward the house.
"Brother, there’s a letter for you!"
Leng Yuan and Gu Jiaojiao came out of the house at the same time.
The postman was a young man in his twenties with dark skin and a ready smile that showed off a neat set of teeth. He often delivered letters to Leng Yuan, so the two were quite familiar.
But this was the first time he had ever seen Gu Jiaojiao.
In the dead of winter, with no greenery in sight, the entire courtyard looked drab and grey. Gu Jiaojiao was wearing a red padded jacket. Unlike the local villagers’ clothing, her jacket was tailored and stylish. Combined with Gu Jiaojiao’s fair, delicate features, the outfit made her look just like a young lady from a wealthy, prominent family.
The young man was instantly stunned by her beauty.
Leng Yuan’s expression darkened, and he instinctively moved to stand in front of Gu Jiaojiao.
