Chapter 189
Julia didn’t think much about Cory’s reaction. Also, even though, Julia and Marcus were still pretending to be a couple, she decided to introduce them properly.
“Cory,” she said with a smile, “meet Marcus. He’s my fiancé. Marcus, this is Cory. We’ve been friends since childhood. We practically grew up together before he suddenly left the city.”
The two men looked at each other before extending their hands. They shook hands firmly, neither of them breaking eye contact. Although both wore polite smiles, there was an invisible tension between them that Julia failed to notice.
Cory smiled lightly before withdrawing his hand.
“Sorry about earlier,” he said. “I only wanted to surprise Julia, and you suddenly grabbed me. I hope you didn’t take it the wrong way.”
Marcus simply nodded calmly.
“It’s alright,” he replied. “I was only reacting on instinct.”
Cory laughed softly before adding, “Honestly, for a moment there, I thought you were just her bodyguard.”
It sounded harmless.
But Marcus immediately caught the subtle insult hidden beneath those words. Cory wasn’t making a joke. He was deliberately belittling him while pretending to be friendly.
Even so, Marcus simply smiled.
Julia, however, didn’t notice anything unusual. She simply stood there smiling, happy that the two of them seemed to be getting along.
A few moments later, Cory looked back at Julia before smiling brightly.
“Well then,” he said, “Marcus… do you mind if I borrow Julia for a while? We have fifteen years to catch up on. There are so many places I want to take her and so many things I want to show her. It’ll only be for a little while.”
Marcus looked at him quietly. He knew that wasn’t an ordinary request.
Any man with common sense wouldn’t ask to take another man’s fiancée away immediately after meeting him. Especially after Julia had already introduced them as a couple.
“I’m sorry,” he replied. “But not today. Julia and I still have several things to discuss together. They’re quite important.”
He gently looked toward Julia before continuing,
“You two can always meet tomorrow morning. You’ll have plenty of time to catch up then.”
Cory’s smile remained on his face.
However, for the briefest moment, something cold flashed across his eyes before disappearing just as quickly.
Even after Marcus rejected the request, Cory still didn’t seem willing to back down. He forced another smile onto his face before saying, “Actually, I… I really wanted to spend some time with her today. It won’t take long. We have so much to catch up on after fifteen years.”
