Ethan always took the hits while Robert did the punching. In that sense, Ethan really wasn’t as street-smart as his younger brother.

“That’s enough,” Rosaline said. She walked over and checked Robert’s hand, which was red from the impact. “Does it hurt? If you kill him, who’s going to sign the transfer papers? Ethan, get over here and apologize to Robert right now. Then sign those documents and get it over with.”

Robert immediately put on a show for Rosaline. “Mom, it hurts. It’s his fault. If he’d just signed, none of this would’ve happened. He’s doing this because he isn’t your real son. He has no respect for you at all. Mom, you have to do something. He’s bullying me. You have to stand up for me!”

Every time he cried or acted weak, Rosaline chose his side without question. This was his standard move for playing her, and it worked every single time.

“It’s okay, stop crying,” Rosaline said to comfort him. Then she threw the transfer agreement right in Ethan’s face. “You ungrateful brat. How dare you hit your brother? Sign the papers and get out. You aren’t welcome here.”

She had three sons of her own, but Robert was the baby. Both she and Dawson had spoiled him rotten. No one had ever told him “no” in his entire life. She wasn’t about to let an outsider like Ethan talk down to her son in front of her.

Rosaline’s words felt like a bucket of ice water to Ethan. He was the one with the bruised face but she only cared if Robert’s hand was sore from punching him.

He had always known he wasn’t her biological son. He was the son of Dawson’s first wife. But the bitterness still stung. He knew she never liked him, but they used to at least keep up appearances. Now, she wasn’t even pretending.

Ethan let out a cold laugh. “You’re dreaming if you think I’m giving the company to him. If he takes over, he’ll lose everything in a week. I’m not letting the Sand family legacy be destroyed. Mom, if you insist on this, we have nothing left to talk about.”

Rosaline’s chest was heaving with rage. She raised her hand to slap him. “You ungrateful bastard! I might not have given birth to you, but I raised you. Is this how you pay me back? Your mother died when you were born. I’m the one who raised you, and you only live to piss me off? If I knew you were like this, I should’ve choked you when you were a baby. You’re a total disappointment.”

Before she could land the slap, Simon Sand caught her arm. “Mom, calm down. Let’s sit and talk. There’s no need for this. We’re family. Let’s just sit down and be civil.”

He led Rosaline over to the sofa and poured her some warm water.

Robert scowled. He was close to winning until Simon stepped in. Simon was always meddling where he didn’t belong.

Robert sat down right next to Rosaline and glared at Simon. “Simon, playing the hero? You’re probably after the CEO spot too, aren’t you? Let me tell you, Mom promised it to me. No matter how much you suck up to her, you’re not getting it. Give up.”

No one ever beat Robert when it came to getting what he wanted. He didn’t lose as a kid, and he wouldn’t lose now.

Simon gave a forced smile. “You’re joking. I don’t want what isn’t mine. I’m fine with whatever Mom wants. I just don’t want her getting so angry that she gets sick. That’s all.”
