Peter nodded. "Ms. Holton, now that you're my client, I'll make sure we win this case."

The three thugs sat frozen, their faces pale with dread.

"Ma'am, please show us some mercy."

"We really don't want to end up in jail."

"Mercy? Not a chance!" Olivia snapped.

The men grew frantic. "We were only carrying out orders that night!"

Olivia froze. "What did you say?"

"It's the truth. Someone hired us to track you."

Olivia couldn't believe her ears. "What nonsense is this? What do you mean, someone hired you? Who on earth would do that?"

After all, she was just an ordinary college student with a spotless reputation. The idea that someone would pay these thugs to humiliate her was nothing short of cruel.

"We'll own up to it all, but can you at least write a letter to pardon us?"

"We really can't afford to go to jail. We were simply desperate for money back then. That's the only reason we gave in and agreed."

"At the end of the day, we didn't actually hurt you, did we?"

Olivia glared at them. "Cut the nonsense! Just tell me who's responsible!"

The thugs exchanged nervous glances. "Fine, we'll tell you the truth. It was a woman named Rebecca Conway who hired us."

Olivia jumped up. "Did you say Rebecca Conway?"

"Yeah, that's her! She was the one who gave us the orders."

"She's got a pretty face and an impressive figure. I'd guess she's about your age."

"Ms. Holton, we're at the police station now. Don't worry. The truth will surface soon enough. No wrongdoer can evade justice," Peter reassured her.

Olivia nodded absentmindedly. All she could do was wait.

After a short while, the officer came back. "Ms. Holton, we've checked the bank records of these three men."

"And? What did you find?" Olivia asked, her voice trembling with anticipation.

"Their story is accurate. On June 16th, a transfer of 50 thousand dollars was made from an account belonging to Rebecca Conway."

"Ma'am, do you believe us now?" one of the thugs asked. "We're telling the truth. Who in their right mind wants to go to prison?"

Olivia sank back into her chair.
