Chapter 143
Cassian
I’m relieved–truly relieved that Gemma promised Grandpa she’s willing to reconsider our relationship. Maybe we still have a shot. Maybe not everything is lost.
When she turns around and sees me, I step forward quickly to speak to her.
“Can we talk?” I ask.
She hesitates. There’s a sadness in her eyes. Soft, quiet, but unmistakable. God, I want to kiss that look away.
We end up on the rooftop balcony.
The night breeze rolls in, and Gemma shivers, pulling her jacket tighter. I don’t hesitate. I slip off mine and drape it around her shoulders.
She blinks at me in surprise, lips parting just slightly. I catch a glimpse of her tongue, pink and soft.
Fuck, I want her. I want her so badly, but now isn’t the time.
I clear my throat, trying to bury the heat rushing through me37

“I heard what you said to Grandpa,” I start.

“Don’t take it the wrong way,” she says quickly. “I didn’t want to ruin his birthday or anything. Please don’t read too much into it.”
The
way she’s trying so hard to put distance between us makes my fists clench.
“Grandpa doesn’t want us to get divorced. And if there’s even a part of you that still cares, then maybe we don’t have to end this with divorce.”
I’ve thought about ending things so many times. Really thought about it.
But every time I imagine her leaving, her walking out of my life for good, something inside me breaks.
I don’t want to lose her.
I don’t want to lose that deep connection I feel when our eyes
meet.
And lately, all I can think about is her. Touching her, holding her, kissing her, claiming her loudly and proudly as my wife.
This “one year” thing has become just a way to stall. 275

At first, it was for Grandpa.
But also, I’d wanted time. Time to see if I could change anything, become better, fix what I broke.

I didn’t expect her to get so worked up the moment I spoke.
“What’s that supposed to mean?” she snaps. “You’re going back on your word now? You promised that we’d divorce after a year.”
“Do you really want a divorce? When Grandpa asked how you felt about me just now, you didn’t exactly say you don’t care.”
It’s that hesitation that gives me hope.
If she still has feelings, if I’m not the only one hanging on, then why not try?
“What the hell are you saying, Cassian? After everything you’ve done to me, you think I still have feelings for you? Are you mocking me?”
She takes a step back, eyes flashing with anger.
“Just because I haven’t fully erased how I feel doesn’t give you the right to treat me like I don’t exist.”

Her voice breaks.

“What, you think I have no pride? You think I’ll let you keep ignoring me just because some pathetic part of me still cares?”
She’s furious, eyes red, nose pink from the cold and wind, and all I want is to pull her into my arms and hold her until the anger fades.
I frown, my heart pounding. “That’s not what I mean. Why do you always twist what I say?” I step closer, cupping her face gently. “I’ve never laughed at your feelings. Not once.”
Her eyes flutter shut.
I feel her trembling.
And when a tear slips free, it nearly kills me.
