**Before Rain Touches Earth Memories Return With Gentle Warmth by Eli Dane Crest**
**Chapter 150**
**Cassian’s POV**
The moment Grandpa slammed his knife and fork onto the table, the sound reverberated through the room like a thunderclap, causing the servants to flinch in unison. I let out a weary sigh, feeling the tension in the air wrap around me like a suffocating blanket.
Donovan Blackwell may have relinquished his throne years ago, but the aura of authority he exuded still commanded a certain degree of fear, reminiscent of a Don who once ruled this empire with an iron grip. His power may have faded with age, but the fire in his spirit remained unquenchable.
And at this moment? He was behaving like an insufferable child, his age doing little to temper his tantrums.
“Grandpa, I assure you, I know what I’m doing. Reyna knows the terrain like the back of her hand, and we’ve successfully handled other deals together before. She’s efficient, reliable, and fiercely loyal—qualities that are hard to find in half the crew, who would spill secrets like a leaky faucet if the price was right.”
His eyes narrowed, locking onto mine with a piercing intensity that made me feel like a scared six-year-old again, standing in his study, bracing myself for a lecture on how I had disappointed him yet again.
“And yet she wasn’t even part of the core logistics team until now. You really believe I’m blind to what’s unfolding here?” he growled, his voice low and dangerous.
I rubbed my temples, trying to stave off the headache brewing behind my eyes. “What does this have to do with Reyna?” I asked, my patience thinning.
“Everything has to do with her because she’s entangled in my damn business,” he snapped, his frustration palpable.
I looked at him, fatigue etched across my features. “She possesses the right skill set for this job, and I don’t have the luxury of babysitting someone new while we’re transporting that volume of arms across four ports, especially with the Nassau deal looming on the horizon.”
With a forceful crash, Grandpa slammed his utensils down once more, the metallic clang echoing ominously, like a warning shot fired in an unyielding battle. I could feel my own blood pressure rising, matching the intensity of his outburst.
“Bullshit! She doesn’t know the eastern docks. She doesn’t know the runners or the customs fixers—hell! She’s clueless about the suppliers we’ve reached out to in the past! This deal is bigger than anything she’s ever touched, and you’re handing her the keys like it’s some kind of bloody joke!”
“Grandpa, Reyna is under supervision, and I see no reason to act as if I’m letting her lead the deal,” I countered, trying to maintain my composure.
He stared at me, his gaze unyielding. “Then why is she listed as your second-in-command in the manifest notes?”
My silence spoke volumes, confirming his suspicions.
Donovan Blackwell may have stepped down from his throne, but his influence still reached deep into every shadow. Right now, he could see through all my defenses.
“You just handed her a role that people would kill for, without even testing if she can handle the heat,” he warned, his voice sharp.
“She earned it through her diplomacy! Are you asking me to disregard her simply because of a personal grudge between her and Gemma? Or have you chosen sides in their childish feud as well?” I shot back, my frustration bubbling over.
“You bypassed your own capos and lieutenants to keep her close. Don’t insult me by calling that a promotion, boy. She doesn’t know the tunnels, and half of those men wouldn’t trust her with their names. And yet you put her on the inside?”
“I don’t know what you think is happening between us, but her skills are essential for handling the negotiations—”
“I’ve heard enough. You’re confusing your reliance on her with her actual competence, and it’s far too risky. She can’t be part of this deal anymore,” he interrupted, his tone brooking no argument.
I stared at him, struggling to remember the last time he had issued me an absolute command regarding the Syndicate since handing over the reins.
“Why are you looking at me like that? Do you genuinely believe I’m old and senile?”
I chose silence, lowering my gaze instead.
His voice turned cold as he gripped his cane tightly and rose from the table. “If you don’t remove her from this deal, I will. And you know how I do things.”
I lifted my chin defiantly, meeting his steely gaze. “You would override my authority as the Don?”
“Not willingly, so you better take care of it yourself. This is a family business, and I won’t allow you to jeopardize it for that wretched girl.”
