**Before Rain Touches Earth Memories Return With Gentle Warmth by Eli Dane Crest 260**
**Chapter 260**
**Cassian’s POV**
Adam gives me another nudge, breaking through the fog of my thoughts. “Now that the press conference has wrapped up, should we head back to the office, or do you think we should swing by Blackwell Industries?” His tone is careful, as if he’s treading on thin ice, and I can’t help but rub my temple in frustration before lifting my gaze to meet his.
“Where is Reyna right now?” I ask, my voice laced with urgency.
“Just ten minutes ago, Mr. Stafford called from Blackwell Industries. After you left, something completely unexpected occurred. Miss Reyna and Rhett both left the building,” he explains, his brow furrowing with concern.
What on earth is happening today? I pull out my phone, my fingers trembling slightly as I dial Liam’s number, my mind racing with possibilities.
“Cassian! You finally decided to call me back!” Liam’s voice bursts through the line, frantic and disheveled. “Do you have any idea what’s going on? Rhett is threatening to withdraw from the company because of Reyna! And those online rumors… tell me, is any of it true? Is there any validity to the evidence Gemma posted?”
The image of Gemma’s evidence flashes vividly in my mind. She’s many things—smart, resourceful, but never reckless. She wouldn’t have gambled everything unless she was absolutely certain of her facts.
At the Blackwell Industries Headquarters, I make a beeline for Reyna’s desk. Her chair sits empty, yet the monitor still glows faintly, a ghost of her presence lingering in the air. Without a moment’s hesitation, I settle into her chair and begin rifling through her files.
“Cassian!” Liam’s voice calls out from the doorway, his expression weary and strained. “There’s really no point in searching through those now. I already checked when Gemma’s tweet first surfaced. The IP address matches this computer—it was Reyna.”
A surge of anger and disbelief battles within me. “She used the company’s computer?” I can’t wrap my head around the reckless decision.
Liam shakes his head, frustration etched on his face. “That’s the dilemma! I can’t tell if Reyna is brilliant or just plain foolish. Instead of covering her tracks, or at least using someone else’s device, she chose this. What was she thinking?”
“When did you start sensing something was off with her?” I probe, desperate for insight.
Liam crosses his arms, his gaze drifting to the floor as if searching for answers in the tiles. “It’s hard to pinpoint exactly. But after she returned from her trip… something felt different. Whenever she was around, the atmosphere shifted, like a subtle tension hung in the air. And you! You started clashing with Gemma more frequently. Misunderstandings, constant arguments…”
“Distant even, but not enough to ignite this level of chaos,” I muse, realizing how Reyna’s presence had altered everything.
Liam exhales slowly, his breath heavy with contemplation. “Cassian, after all these years of friendship… now that everything has exploded like this, what do you plan to do?”
I hesitate, weighing my thoughts carefully.
He shakes his head, almost as if he’s trying to convince himself. “I played a role in this too. I shouldn’t have acted so impulsively. Maybe we should all sit down and talk this through. Rhett’s my friend; I can’t just cut him off completely over a woman like Reyna. It simply isn’t worth it.”
Rising from the chair, I mutter softly, “Let’s find him.”
**Gemma’s POV**
The storm has come and gone, and thankfully, we’ve managed to weather it… at least for the moment.
With every notification lighting up my phone, a strange sense of calm envelops me. Reyna is finally the one under scrutiny, not me.
All the evidence is laid bare for everyone to see, and for once, I don’t have to shoulder the burden of concealing her schemes. A wave of relief washes over me.
“Let’s go out!” I declare to the team, springing up from the couch as if I’ve just been given a new lease on life.
Zina raises an eyebrow, her arms crossed defensively as she grapples with her lingering anger. “Out? Where exactly do you want to go?”
Her tone leaves no room for argument. Jace glances at me, then back at Zina, caught in the middle of our playful banter.
As we pull out, I catch a glimpse of Zina draping an arm around Molly’s shoulders, while the poor girl looks like a deer caught in headlights.
I press my foot against the gas pedal, the cool wind rushing through the half-open window, the engine humming beneath my fingertips. Beside me, Jace remains quiet, as he always does.
But I notice him sneaking glances at me, his lips pressed together as if he’s wrestling with unspoken words.
“Spit it out already. No secrets between us, remember?” I prod, tapping the steering wheel.
His eyes flick toward me, hesitant. “If he finds out… that you exposed Reyna’s secrets, won’t he treat you badly?”
I let out a laugh, the sound ringing with confidence. “Treat me badly? Please. If he honestly believes I wronged poor Reyna, then he can divorce her and hand over everything she wants. I’ll even help him pack his bags.”
I mean it, too. The thought no longer terrifies me.
Jace exhales softly, but he doesn’t press further. His silence speaks volumes; at least he believes I’ve drawn a line when it comes to Cassian.
We come to a stop at a red light, and I lean back, stretching my arms when headlights flare in the rearview mirror. I glance casually, and through the tinted glass, I spot Cassian.
My stomach drops like a stone.
He’s sitting in the backseat of the car behind us, and fate has decided to play the cruelest trick of all.
I snap my head forward, muttering under my breath, “Shit… out of all the cars in the city, and all the intersections in the world! Did we really have to bump into each other?”
