Chapter 276
Gemma’s POV
I feel like a stranger in my own skin, and my mind reels at this question. His voice, cold and detached, cuts through the silence. Who is the father?““”
The fire that ignites in my chest burns away the last of my weakness. “How dare you!”
He has the audacity to look puzzled, drawing a long breath. “I’m not looking for a fight, Gemma. I just need to understand what’s happening. The scene at the airport… explain it to me.”
Before I can gather my shattered composure, Mikhail pushes off the wall with a lazy smirk. “The scene was rather self–explanatory, wasn’t it?” He drawls, his eyes glinting with amusement. “Or did the public commentary not paint a clear enough picture for you?”
The air crackles as Cassian’s gaze snaps to his. It’s a silent, brutal clash of wills.
After a tense moment, Cassian is the first to look away. He doesn’t believe it, I can see the reluctant acknowledgment in the tight line of his jaw.
He knows, down to his bones, that I am not capable of such a thing.

The door swings open, and the doctor enters, a simple manila folder in his hand feeling like a deeree of fate.
Ms. Marino, your results.
Cassian steps forward, physically inserting himself between the doctor and my bed. “As her husband, I have a right to know. Is my wife pregnant?”
The doctor’s eyes flick from Cassian’s demanding posture to my pale face on the pillow. His expression hardens with clear disapproval. “Your wife has just been through a medical crisis! Perhaps your first concern should be for her health, not an interrogation.”
“I am concerned for her health…‘
Cassian counters, but it’s too late.
The doctor ignores him, turning to me.
As he opens his mouth, a shrill electronic ringtone blares from Cassian’s pocket. The sound is obscenely loud in the quiet room, and the doctor shoots him a look of pure exasperation.
Cassian silences it with a hurried movement. My apologies. Please, proceed.‘
It rings again, instantly. The incessant noise grates on my last

nerve, amplifying the pounding in my skull.
Of course, his other world is calling like it always does.
If it’s so important, then go and answer it!
I snap.
He glances at the screen, and I see the conflict; duty to his company versus the unresolved tension in this room. It’s a battle I’ve seen him lose a hundred times.
At that moment, the doctor frowns at the folder. “One moment. A page is missing from the report”
He glances at me, and I give a tight nod. The moment the door shuts, Cassian makes his choice.
have to take this, he says, the phone already at his ear as he strides out.
When the doctor returns, his eyes scan the room, noting Cassian’s absence. “…Your husband?”
“You can give the results to me, Doctor. I am the patient.”
He studies me for a long moment, his gaze seeing past my appearance and looking at the strain and isolation.
Very well. The confirmation is in. You are three weeks pregnant.

Mikhail lets out a low breath, his smirk vanishing, replaced by genuine shock. His eyes drop to my abdomen, and the reality of the situation seems to truly dawn on him.
My own hand flutters involuntarily to my stomach. A life, conceived in a bed that has felt like a battlefield for years.
That can’t be, I whisper, a desperate denial. “I was careful. I even took a test… it was negative.
Home tests are not infallible, and no form of contraception is one hundred percent effective.
A fierce, protective instinct surges through me. This is my truth. My secret… my choice.
Mikhail!” I command, my voice suddenly steady and clear. The door.”
He moves without hesitation, closing it and, at my pointed stare, turning the lock.
I turn my full attention to the doctor, my eyes pleading, my voice dropping to a hushed, urgent whisper. “Doctor, I need you to keep this from my husband.”

He professional demeanor locks into place. “Ms. Marino, he is your legal spouse. He has a right=”
I know his rights! I interrupt, the words tumbling out in a frantic rush. “But you don’t understand our situation. He does not want a child with me. If he knows, he will pressure me to terminate. This is my child… please. You must understand a mother’s right to protect her baby.”
I am laying my soul bare, begging him to see my terror. He is trapped, his ethics warring with the raw, desperate fear in my
eyes.
Finally, he lets out a long, slow breath.
I will not lie for you. But what you choose to disclose to him… that is your private affair.
It is a bureaucratic loophole, but it’s enough.
“Thank you.”
The doctor leaves, and Cassian returns moments later. Well? What did he say?““‘”
I force my face into a mask of weary annoyance, “It’s a severe stomach bug. That’s all.”
Just a bug? The surprise is evident, but so is the fleeting shadow of disappointment. It confuses me. What game is he playing
