Chapter 308
Gemma’s POV
The hallway is obscenely quiet, but the noise guides me. I hear their strained, grunting struggle before I see them.
I round the corner and the scene unfolds like a bad play. Cassian is braced against the doorframe of suite 407, his body a rigid line. He’s shoving, trying to close the door from the inside, but Kitty has her entire body wedged in the opening, her fingers clawing at the wood to keep it open and slide inside at any cost.
Cassian, you’re drunk, she’s whining. “Let me in to take care of you. What if something happens to you while you’re alone?”
He’s swaying, a fine sheen of sweat on his pale face. The drug is a visible weight pulling him down, but his eyes, though clouded, hold a sharp, revolted clarity. “Get out!”
The words are a low, guttural command, but his strength is failing. He shouldn’t struggle against a woman’s strength, but now his energy is draining fast, his muscles betraying him.
I see the moment Kitty feels his resistance waver, and that’s when I move. My hand closes around her upper arm, yanking her back from the doorway.
The force of it spins her halfway around, and before she can even process it, my other hand swings, landing on her cheek in a sharp, satisfying crack.

Kitty, have you no shame?

She stumbles back, a hand flying to her reddening cheek, her eyes wide with pure, unadulterated shock.
Gemma! You’ve misunderstood! She gasps, the lies falling from her lips with ease. “Cassian is drunk, and I was just trying to help him rest. There’s nothing more to it!”
My gaze flicks down to the gaping buttons on her blouse. “Helping him rest involves unbuttoning your shirt completely?” My voice is dangerously quiet.
Kitty, just because your mother is my aunt, I let you intern at Blackwell Industries. On your first day, you tried to use backdoor connections and seduce my husband?
At that moment, Zina, Molly, and Jace arrive, their footsteps hushed on the carpet. Their eyes take in the scene in a single, comprehending glance. I don’t even have to look; I hear the distinct click of Zina’s phone camera activating.
Don’t record this! Kitty shrieks, throwing her hands up to shield her face, her composure shattering.
What’s the matter? Zina taunts, circling her like a shark. “You dare to do it but are afraid of being exposed? If you have the guts to seduce a man, don’t fear the consequences!”
I hold up the plastic bag containing the tumbler. “There’s something in this glass that you put in to drug him.”
I watch her eyes fix on it, widening in genuine terror. “If we have it tested, you won’t get away with this!”

The fight drains out of her instantly. She’s about to graduate from university, a scandal like this isn’t just embarrassing. It will ruin her.
The tears that spring to her eyes are the first real thing I’ve seen from her all night. “Gemma, I was wrong…”
She whimpers, her voice trembling. “I just had a bit too much to drink and made a mistake. Please forgive me this once!”
Save your excuses for the police. Now, get out!
She’s still sputtering, unwilling to accept her defeat, but Zina and Jace are already on her, each taking an arm. They bodily drag her down the hallway, her protests fading around the
corner.
I finally turn to Cassian. He’s slumped against the doorframe, utterly spent. His head hangs low, his disheveled hair covering his face, making him look pathetic and young.
A sigh escapes me, heavy with a mixture of frustration and something dangerously close to pity. I am so unbelievably unlucky. I nudge his leg with my foot.
Move.
He shuffles back just enough for me to step through, and I close the door firmly behind us, shutting out the world.
Go take a shower, I tell him, thinking the cold water might shock the remnants of the drug out of his system.

He lifts his head at my words, his eyes struggling to focus, “Honey?”
Don’t call me Honey!

He pushes himself away from the wall, swaying dangerously. He tries to take a step toward me stumbles, and barely catches himself on a nearby armchair. “Honey…“he slurs again, insistently. “I behaved well this time. I didn’t do anything with another woman!”
I meet his hazy, earnest gaze. “So should I praise you for that?”
He doesn’t catch the sarcasm. He just nods, a slow, clumsy bob of his head. “Yes.”
Go take a shower! I snap, steering him by his shoulders into the bathroom and turn on the shower, guiding him directly under the spray without bothering to check the temperature. The icy water hits him and he gasps, his whole body flinching.
So… cold.
He shivers, pouting under the deluge. The mighty Don of Blackwell Industries, the heir to the Blackwell family, is just a shivering man–child.
The sight is so absurd that some of my anger dissipates. I sigh, reaching in to adjust the showerhead so it isn’t hitting his face directly, and I turn the dial, letting warm water mix with the cold.
Hold this yourself, I instruct, placing the showerhead in his limp

is on the bedside table. Adam needs to bring a change of clothes.
I pick it up, the screen dark and locked. I don’t know his password. It feels like an intrusion, but necessity wins.
I try his birthday first. Incorrect.
A faint, foolish hope makes me try my own. Incorrect!
I almost laugh at myself. Wasn’t that wishful thinking? This is Cassian Blackwell, not some sentimental hero from a novel.
I try Reyna’s birthday next, a bitter pill to swallow. Incorrect.
I frown. There aren’t many significant dates left. Only one, really. Our wedding anniversary. It seems the most unlikely of all.
I’m already preparing to go back into the steamy bathroom and make him unlock it himself when my fingers tap the numbers in. There’s a soft click, and the screen comes to life.
He actually used our wedding anniversary…!
The moment is broken by a loud, heavy thud from the bathroom. I rush back, shoving the door open. Cassian is sprawled on the tile floor. His pants are tangled around his ankles; he must have lost his balance trying to take them off.
A wave of pure exasperation washes over me.
I kneel down to help him up, but his hand shoots out, his grip Surprisingly strong. He pulls me closer, and I find our faces

around us.

Honey, he says, and his voice is clearer now, his eyes holding mine with a focused intensity. “I didn’t touch her, she lied that you were also invited to today’s dinner, that’s why I came. Don’t be mad, please.”
Hearing the clear logic in his words, I know the drug’s hold is loosening. He’s sobering up. So I pull my hand from his grasp, breaking the moment.
“Mm, I’m not mad…”
I say, standing up and brushing my knees.
And it’s the truth. I’m not angry, not really. I just find it darkly amusing that he is so consistently and easily fooled. He was taken in by Reyna, and now by Kitty.
Maybe he’s just destined to be deceived by women, a handsome, powerful pawn in their games. And I, it seems, am destined to be the one who cleans up the mess.
