The End of a Marriage (Colette and Matheo) novel Chapter 182

Chapter 182

The days blurred together, each one a cycle of appointments,

treatments, and exhaustion. Amber tried to keep up appearances,

tried to maintain some sense of normalcy for Nico, but it was

becoming harder. The energy that once fueled her was gone, replaced by a deep, unrelenting fatigue that left her barely able to get out of bed some days. Her body, once vibrant and full of life, felt like a shell -her strength drained by the relentless treatments.

The worst part was the impact it had on her relationship with Nico. Amber had always been the mother who could do it allpick him up when he fell, chase him through the house, make him laugh until his belly ached. But now, every time he came to her with a question or to show her something exciting he had done, she felt too tired to respond. She hated seeing the concern in his eyes, the way he would tentatively touch her arm, asking if she was okay. He was too young to fully understand what was going on, but the innocence in his eyes had changed. He was beginning to sense that something was wrong.

But even in those moments of sadness, there were sparks of light. Nico’s laughter, his innocent joy, still filled the house in short bursts. When he would climb into bed with her, curl up beside her, and whisper about his day, she could almost forget about the sickness. In those moments, Amber felt like herself againlike the mother she had always been, the woman who was full of life and love. It was

those brief moments of connection that kept her going, that

reminded her that there was more to live for than the pain..

The isolation, however, was harder to ignore. The house, once filled

with laughter and warmth, felt eerily quiet now. Amber could see it in

the way Luca would look at her sometimes, his eyes searching hers as

if trying to hold onto the woman he had known, as if afraid that this

version of herthe sick, weak woman in front of himwas all he was

going to have. The tension between them was palpable, and though

they tried to keep things normal, there was no escaping the

uncertainty that hung in the air.

One afternoon, after another grueling round of chemotherapy, Amber

found herself sitting alone in the living room, staring blankly at the

wall. Her body felt heavy, a weight she couldn’t shake. The dizziness

had started again, making everything around her feel unsteady. She

wanted to rest, wanted to lie down, but something kept her rooted to

the spot. The exhaustion was allconsuming, but the fear of letting

herself sleep, of losing herself in the numbness, held her back.

Luca found her sitting there, her face pale and drawn, her eyes

unfocused. The moment he stepped into the room, Amber could feel

his presencefelt the familiar weight of his concern as he knelt

beside her. His hand found her knee, and he squeezed it gently, as if

offering her silent comfort.

You need to rest,Luca said, his voice soft, but thick with emotion.

Please, Amber. Let me help you.

Amber shook her head, her eyes glassy with exhaustion. I’m fine,

she lied, her voice barely above a whisper. I just need a minute.

Luca’s hand tightened on her knee, his fingers trembling slightly as

he spoke. I’m so scared, Amber. I’m scared that I’ll lose you.The

words came out in a rush, and Amber could see the tears pooling in

his eyes, his vulnerability laid bare before her.

The confession shattered something inside her. She had been trying

so hard to shield him from her own fear, trying to remain strong for

him, but in that moment, she saw the cracks in his facade. He wasn’t

okay, and it broke her heart.

Amber reached out, her hand trembling as she touched his, trying to

offer him the same strength he had always given her. I’m not going

anywhere, she said, her voice low but firm. We’re going to get

through this, Luca. I promise you.

But even as she said the words, the doubt gnawed at her. She didn’t

know how much longer she could keep fighting, how long her body

could withstand the onslaught of treatments. The truth was, she
