The Ex-Wife's Burning Elegance novel Chapter 2139

For some reason, Stella found it hard to adjust to the silence.

She knew she needed to keep her distance, but her only defense mechanism was refusing to initiate contact.

Whenever he texted her first, she almost always replied.

A classic saying popped into her head.

Her lips said no, but her actions betrayed her.

Ever since that movie theater trip, she had been harboring the urge to test him.

But now, he had suddenly cut off all communication.

Was he playing hard to get? Trying to reel her in by pulling away?

Stella couldn't read him at all.

Just then, her phone rang.

She snatched it up out of pure reflex, her eyes narrowing as she read the caller ID.

She answered. "Laurel?"

It had been a while since they last spoke.

A sudden call from Laurel Quinn caught Stella off guard.

"Stella, have you been in touch with Joshua recently?" Laurel asked.

Ever since Joshua had noticed the oddity in how they addressed each other, the two women had agreed to use first names.

They weren't exactly best friends, so terms of endearment like 'Star' or 'Laurel' felt too forced for both of them. First names were the perfect compromise.

Stella paused. "Yes."

"When?" Laurel pressed.

Stella frowned at the urgency in her voice.

"Three days ago... Did something happen?"

"I tried to contact him yesterday, but I couldn't reach him," Laurel said, her tone grave. "He's ignoring my texts and calls.

I figured he was just busy, so I didn't push it.
