The old ghost’s first instinct was to ask the idol, who had not reincarnated for years due to lingering concerns in his heart, what it was that was troubling him.
If possible, he wanted to help him resolve it.
Jeffrey looked at the old ghost, then at Scarlett Jennings beside him, and seemed to feel there was nothing to hide.
"I want to find my sister."
Jeffrey was born into a not-so-reputable family.
A mother who died young, a father who liked to drink and beat people; he and his sister grew up relying on each other.
Once he somewhat resembled a teenager, he attempted to resist his father.
But he never succeeded.
By the age of fifteen, he dropped out of school to work.
He waited tables at a restaurant and carried bricks at a construction site; he wanted to earn money.
He thought if he could earn enough, he could take his sister away from that man.
He could support her.
That man knew his intentions, but instead held onto his sister tighter to prevent her from leaving.
Because he could earn money, the man knew that as long as he kept his sister, he wasn’t afraid Jeffrey wouldn’t bring money home.
Jeffrey not only couldn’t free his sister from their father’s control, but was even exploited more severely.
If the money he brought home was less than expected, he would still suffer that man’s beatings.
One day, he couldn’t take it anymore.
So he left his sister behind and ran away.
He told himself he wasn’t abandoning his sister; he left to gain strength, to make himself stronger.
Then he’d come back to take his sister away from that man.
He repeatedly comforted himself.
But no amount of self-comfort could change the fact he knew deep down inside.
He was a deserter.
A deserter who left his sister to run away alone.
To prevent the guilt from drowning him, he threw himself into various jobs, ready to do anything as long as he could earn money.
Perhaps he was lucky enough to be spotted by a director from a crew while playing extra.
Thereafter, he was signed by a talent agency.
He was repackaged and began a life of learning, working, and catching schedules.
The road to fame was long and winding, but he persevered.
To avoid getting dragged back into the mire again, he resisted going back to that home.
Eventually, he made a name for himself, earned money, and owned his place.
Jeffrey felt it was time he could confront that man, so he returned with bodyguards to that home.
He thought to himself, he would take his sister away from that man, even if he had to snatch her away.
He had thought his sister might resent him, thought that man would make wild demands; he had all kinds of expectations, but he never imagined that his sister was gone.
Half a year ago, a drinking buddy of his father’s came to visit, and made advances on his grown-up sister, who cracked his head open and ran away from home.
She never came back after that.
Driven mad, Jeffrey broke that man’s leg and used all his connections to try and find his sister.
Besides finding her, he worked relentlessly to raise his exposure.
He thought as long as he was popular enough, his sister might see him and contact him.
But even after he became famous in South River, even after he died in a car accident, he never found his sister.
Even when a whole street mourned him with white chrysanthemums, none of those people included his sister.
He’d truly lost his sister.
