Desmond went quiet for a second on the other end of the comm, then replied, “Yes, boss.”

After the call ended, he lifted his head and looked at the spaceship still undergoing refits. The corner of his mouth lifted. It was barely noticeable, but it was a smile.
He remembered something from long ago, when he was at Hewitt Castle. The head of the Hewitts once said, “Whether a place truly has roots depends on whether anyone is willing to stay and pass their skills on to the next generation.”
Now, the farm had roots.
Three days later, everyone who had signed up received a new message on their device.

Peter was in the greenhouse, tying up tomato vines. When his wrist vibrated, the string in his hand nearly slipped to the ground.
He took a deep breath and raised his wrist.
“Oasis Farm Internal Recruitment Training Notice…”
His heart skipped a beat.
“Peter, thank you for participating in this internal recruitment. After preliminary screening, you have met the application requirements and are hereby notified to attend pre–job training. Details are as follows:
“1. Training period: Starting next Monday, lasting one month.
“2. Training location: Newly built training grounds (east side of the farm).
“3. Training content:
“Spaceship Pilot Applicants: Concentrated theoretical training and simulator–based operation practice.
“Spaceship Technician Applicants: Training in spaceship structure, energy systems, and mechanical modification maintenance skills.
“Spaceship Escort Officer Applicants: Physical training, basic weapons handling, mech operation, and tactical coordination. “4. After training, a comprehensive evaluation will be conducted. Top candidates will be selected for official positions. Those not selected will have this training recorded in their personal file and will be given priority consideration for future role adjustments.
“Please report to the training grounds tomorrow at 8:00 a.m. with your personal belongings. Training uniforms and equipment will be issued on–site.”
Peter stared at the message and read it three full times.
The first time, he only saw the words training, one month, and evaluation.
The second time, he noticed that non–selected candidates would still have the training recorded and receive priority in the future.
The third time, he finally understood the whole notice.
Slowly, he lowered his wrist and stood there, motionless.

Tasha had already crept over beside him, standing on tiptoe to peek at his screen. “Well? What is it? Is it the notice? Is it?!”
Peter didn’t answer.
He suddenly squatted down and buried his face in his knees.
Tasha was startled. “Peter? Peter, what’s wrong?”
His shoulders were shaking.
She panicked and crouched beside him, trying to steady him. “Hey, don’t scare me. Did you not make it? It’s okay. There’s always next time-”
“I made it.”
His voice came out muffled from his knees.
“Huh?”
“Well, not exactly.” Peter lifted his head. His eyes were red, but his grin stretched wide, goofy and unrestrained. “There’s training! A whole month! Then the evaluation after that. Even if I don’t get picked in the end, I still get to learn for a month!”
He suddenly sprang to his feet and bounced between the tomato rows. He really bounced, his head nearly hitting the hanging vine
ropes.
“A whole month! I can learn escort work! Learn to shoot! Learn to pilot mechs!”
He bounced again.
Tasha stared at him. She was stunned at first, then burst out laughing. As she laughed, her eyes grew a little misty.
“Alright, alright, quit jumping. You’re gonna shake all the tomatoes loose.” She grabbed his sleeve, laughing so hard that her voice trembled slightly. “Peter, you’ve got this. You really do.”
Peter stopped, breathed hard, and looked at her. Then, he suddenly reached out and pulled her into a tight hug before letting go just as quickly.
“I’m gonna tell Ella and the others!” he shouted, turning and running off. At the door, he spun back and yelled, “Tasha! Thank you!” Tasha stood there, watching his figure disappear beyond the greenhouse door. She shook her head with a smile.
“Idiot.”
She turned back to tying the tomato vines. After fastening two, she suddenly smiled again.
It felt really good.
