Chapter 438 Whoa
The comm channel fell silent.
Then Tyson’s voice came through, shaking so badly it was barely recognizable. “What… what just happened?”
On the ground, Dwayne was still sitting where he’d dropped, his mouth hanging open wide enough to fit a fist through.
Tiffany stood with her jaw slack and her eyes blown wide.
Deon stared at the fireball on the screen, and his mind had simply stopped working.

He turned his head slowly toward the spot where Rupert’s ship had been. All that remained was a burning wreck failing toward the ground.
Then, through the comm, Rupert’s voice came through.
Broken and fragmented, like a dying man’s last words.
“Sir… the Chief of Staff… said this farm… must be wiped…”
The voice cut out.
Deon stood there, perfectly still, like something carved from stone.
In the air, Desmond’s ship hung exactly where it had been, completely unharmed, without so much as a scratch on the hull.
The white light had vanished, as though it had never existed at all,
Desmond opened his eyes and found himself still alive.
He looked down at his own hands. He looked out the window at the wreckage falling in the distance. He stood there frozen, unable to process any of it, like a man caught between waking and dreaming.
“Boss…” Tobin said, struggling to get the word out. “Did we just…”
“We didn’t die,” Desmond said.
His voice was steady. His hands were shaking.
“That light…” Sevyn murmured. “What was that…”
Nobody had an answer.
On the ground, Elizabeth turned slowly and looked at Deon.
Her face was still, but something was moving in her eyes.
f
“Colonel Barron,” she said. Her voice was quiet, but it landed on Deon like a hammer. “It seems like your people had a bit of an
accident.”
Deon looked up at her.

Those eyes, which had held nothing but surprise and curiosity just minutes ago, had completely changed. Shock, fury, fear, and something else, something he didn’t want to name, a raw, unmoored bewilderment.
He opened his mouth, and what came out was rough and foreign–sounding. like it belonged to someone else.
“What did you do?”
Elizabeth looked at him and said nothing.
Deon shot to his feet. His chair flew back and hit the floor with a sharp crack.

Colonel Barron.”
Elizabeth’s voice wasn’t loud. It landed on him like cold water straight to the face.
She hadn’t moved. She stood exactly where she’d been, her gaze steady and nearly impassive.
“What did you just say? What did I do?”
Deon breathed hard and kept his eyes fixed on her.
“What you’re suggesting,” Elizabeth continued, her tone still quiet, “is that I, a farm owner, used some mysterious weapon! allegedly obtained from somewhere, and attacked Kingdom Military Command ships, resulting in the deaths of six service members?”
“That’s exactly what happened!” Deon’s voice cracked on the last word. “That energy cannon was not rated for inspection drills! That’s a direct violation of protocol!”
Elizabeth looked at him, and a small smile crossed her face.

Elizabeth repeated it word by word. “You said, ‘You’ve gone off course!‘ And then your
