Chapter 620 Light in Dead Eyes

His eyes had changed. No longer clouded, no longer dim, no longer that look of a man crushed under some invisible weight.

There was a light in them he hadn’t shown in a very long time. Faint still, but truly there, and truly lit.

Cyrus saw the change in him, and his own heart lifted.

He’d known Dale for over 20 years, and he’d never once seen a look like this on his face.

The look of a drowning man who suddenly sees a rope stretched out toward the shore.

Cyrus smiled and asked, Want to give it a try? The farm happens to be hiring. You fit the bill, too. As long as your body clears the basic evaluation, you’re in.”

Dale’s mouth opened, the word yes nearly leaping straight out of him.

He’d never wanted anything so badly; not even the first time he’d stepped onto a battlefield had the urge run this strong.

But he glanced down at the two children beside him, and the words caught in his throat.

A001 was a long way from Centria. Even with a direct route, there was no commuting back and forth every day.

If he went, what would happen to these two kids?

His wife, Sabrina Cliff, was raising two children on her own and holding down a job besides. How could she possibly manage?

And with him gone, what if someone gave them trouble?

He lowered his head and stayed silent for a good while.

Cyrus,he said, his voice dropping, I want to go, but these two kidsand my wifeI can’t just leave them here and walk away.”

It was as if Cyrus had been waiting for exactly this.

He smiled and clapped Dale on the shoulder.

Don’t worry. The farm’s owner said that if you’re willing, you can bring the whole family

along. There are staff dormitories over there, a family district, even a hospital and a school.

He crouched down to the two children’s eye level. You two want to go with your daddy to that beautiful place?

The little boy looked up, his eyes going round.

He looked at Cyrus, then at his father, his voice small, carrying a careful, hopeful edge. Mistercan we really go with Mommy and Daddy?

The little girl tugged at her brother’s sleeve too, tipping her face up, those big eyes full of light, as if she was afraid to hear a no.

Cyrus stroked the girl’s head and looked at her, in earnest. You can. There are lots of other kids about your age over there. You’ll go to school together, play together. You’re going to love

it.

The two children went quiet for a beat, then, as if it hit them both at the same moment, they leapt up in excitement.

Really?! We get to go!

We get to live there! With strawberries! And chickens! And crabs!

Like two little birds set free from a cage, they raced around the cramped living room, their laughter ringing through the tiny space.

Dale watched his two children tumbling around together, and his eyes stung.

It had been so long since he’d heard them laugh this happily.

They’d never once complained about being poor, never once asked for anything nice.

But he knew they’d never laughed this freely, this openly, either.

Cyrus, I’ve decided,he said, lifting his head. I’ll go. If I really can bring them along, I’ll work myself to the bone for them.

Cyrus nodded.

All right. Then get yourself ready, put your paperwork in order, and I’ll hand it in for you. But you’d better tell your wife first.”

Dale answered, took out his device, and called his wife.
