CHAPTER 25
Lisa stared at Alex, her jaw clenched so tightly it ached. Five minutes. He wanted five minutes of her time while Ben was suffering alone. The audacity of it made her blood boil.
“You know what this is, don’t you?” Lisa’s voice was sharp, cutting. “This is just another one of your pathetic attempts to compete for my attention. You’re jealous of Ben, so you create these dramatic situations to make me focus on you instead.”
“Lisa, that’s not-”
“Don’t interrupt me!” She held up her hand, her eyes flashing with fury. “A man is sick, Alex. Actually sick. And you’re standing here, playing your little games, trying to manipulate me into staying. Do you have any idea how selfish that is? How immature?”
Alex’s face remained impassive, which only infuriated Lisa more. “I’m not trying to manipulate-”
“Yes, you are!” Lisa’s voice rose to a near-shriek “You’ve always been like this! Always demanding my time, my attention, my energy. Never thinking about what I need, what my responsibilities are. Ben needs me right now, and you can’t stand it!”
“This has nothing to do with Ben,” Alex said quietly. “This is about us. About our marriage.”
“There is no ‘us’ anymore!” Lisa spat the words like venom. “You made sure of that when you walked out. When you chose to throw away everything we built together because you couldn’t handle me having a professional relationship with another man!”
She shoved Alex hard, catching him off-guard. With his injured leg and the crutches, he stumbled backward, barely catching himself against her desk.
“Lisa!” Alex’s voice held a note of shock.
“Don’t you
dare say my name like that,” Lisa hissed, advancing on him. “Like you’re the victim here. Like I’m the one who’s done something wrong. You don’t know what’s appropriate, Alex. You never have. A man is sick, running a fever, and you’re here playing jealous husband, trying to keep me from helping him. It’s disgusting.”
Alex straightened himself, his face hardening. “If you would just look at these papers-
“Oh, I’m sure I know exactly what those are,” Lisa cut him off, snatching the divorce agreement from his hands. “More of your demands, right? More ways for you to leech off of me. Let me guess-you want alimony? Want me to pay you off so you can go live comfortably with your new rich girlfriend?”
“That’s not-‘
“How much, Alex?” Lisa flipped through the pages with angry, jerky movements. “How much are you trying to extort from me this time? Ten thousand? Twenty? Is that why you’re really here? To squeeze money out of me before I kick you to the curb?”

“Lisa, if you would just read it—”
“I don’t need to read it!” Lisa reached the last page, her eyes scanning the signature line. “I know exactly what this is. You want something from me. You always want something from me. Money, attention, validation. Well, you know what? Fine. I’ll give you what you want.”
She pulled a pen from her desk drawer and signed her name with harsh, angry strokes. The pen nearly tore through the paper.
“There!” She threw the papers at Alex, watching them flutter to the floor at his feet. “Are you happy now? Is this what you wanted? Another thing you can take from me?”
Alex stared at the papers scattered on the floor, his expression unreadable. “Lisa-”
