Karl shook his head. "You know that still shocks me. How can Immortals be so bad at immortality?"

The Elder laughed. "Everyone wants to get ahead. Being the weakest Immortal is no different than being a common-ranked mortal. You get no respect.

So, they put their lives on the line to get as far ahead and gain as many opportunities as they can.

And there are plenty of opportunities.
