"Oh! Mika! I haven't seen you in ages!"
The owner, Maggie, wearing a floral sundress with her hair clipped sharply back, hurried over.
She placed a warm hand on Mika's back and guided them to a window booth. "Come on, I saved you a prime spot. It's a bit quieter here, and you get a nice view of the street."
Mika and Lucas sat down. Maggie pulled out a menu, handed it to Lucas, and practically beamed.
"What'll it be, handsome? I guarantee everything here is top-notch."
As Lucas glanced at the menu, Maggie leaned down and whispered conspiratorially in Mika's ear. "First time you've ever brought a guy here! Who is he? Boyfriend? He's a catch!"
Mika's face burned. She tugged desperately at Maggie's elbow, whispering back.
"Friend. Just a friend."
"Sure, sure, I get it."
Maggie gave her a knowing look, standing up and brushing her bangs aside. "Well, you know the menu inside out. Give the handsome guy some recommendations. Holler if you need anything!"
"Thanks, Maggie. Go do your thing."
After Maggie walked away, Mika knew Lucas had definitely heard the teasing. Feeling entirely awkward, she pointed weakly at the menu.
"The spicy wings are their signature. The loaded potato skins and smoked brisket are amazing too. Oh, and the honey-glazed ribs. Just pick whatever sounds good, you really can't go wrong."
Lucas ordered everything she suggested, tacked on a few extra sides that caught his eye, and handed the menu to the server. Then, he smiled at Mika.
"You seem pretty close with the owner. Do you come here a lot?"
Mika waved her hands dismissively. "I wish. A few plates here easily run over fifty bucks. I used to work here, actually. I did treat Seraphina a couple of times, though."
"Worked here?" Lucas watched her cheerful expression, his smile fading slightly. "Like a work-study thing?"
"Yep," Mika said, smoothly pouring them both a glass of lemon water. Her tone was completely casual.
