The Girl They Ignored Returned as the Woman Seven Men Would Die For novel Chapter 39

Both Xanthe Zimmerman and Lily Davenport were in the dorm room.

One was binge-watching a show in bed, while the other was slurping down instant noodles at her desk.

Cornered by Mika's question, a million thoughts raced through Seraphina's mind in a fraction of a second.

Ultimately, she tilted her head with practiced innocence and said casually, "Oh, I forgot to tell you! Jude gave me this necklace at the hospital yesterday."

Lying ran the risk of exposure. It was much better to announce it openly, proving she had absolutely nothing to hide.

The moment the words left her mouth, Lily's noodle-slurping stopped dead, and Xanthe instantly paused her show.

Mika stared at Seraphina in silence, a look of profound shock clearly written on her face.

Seraphina touched the necklace at her throat and continued with a bright, easy smile.

"He said he's been too busy to spend time with you, so he wanted me to look out for you. He said if anything happens to you, I should let him know right away. Think of it as him bribing your best friend."

With that explanation, the suffocating tension in the room seemed to lift slightly, and the sound of slurping resumed.

Mika also let out a visible sigh of relief. She chuckled, flicking the pendant around Seraphina's neck as she spoke in a half-joking, half-jealous tone.

"Hmph, he didn't even buy me the full-diamond version. I'm definitely going to demand compensation from him later."

That single, perfectly timed sentence plunged the room straight back into a dead, awkward silence.

Seraphina could practically hear the furious typing of Xanthe and Lily gossiping about her on their phones.

Clutching the fabric of her skirt, she forced her words out.

"Maybe he bought the wrong one? Mika, are you upset? If you are, I'll take it off and give it to you."

"What are you talking about?" Mika smiled, though she deliberately pulled her hand back from Seraphina's shoulder.

She walked over to the door, slipping her white sneakers back on with a light laugh. "We're best friends. It's no big deal if my boyfriend buys you a little gift."

Noticing her movements, Seraphina asked, "Are you heading out?"
