"Mika!!!"
Damaris's hysterical, shrieking breakdown echoed through the speaker.
Knowing a torrential downpour of vile insults was about to follow, Mika gave a cold scoff and simply hung up the phone.
No matter how many times Damaris tried to call back, she ignored it.
Staring at the phone vibrating angrily on her desk, Mika pulled her knees to her chest and forced her attention back to Julian's words.
This was the first time in her entire life she had ever spoken so harshly to her mother.
Even though her body was still trembling violently from the trauma response, an unprecedented wave of liberating relief washed over her.
But provoking Damaris wasn't just about venting her anger.
A much longer-term, riskier plan was already taking shape in her mind.
Whether things would play out the way she anticipated all depended on Saturday—
Lucas's party.
-
For the rest of the week, Mika attended her classes as usual, spending every free second setting up The Restoration Society.
Finally, on Friday morning, all the paperwork was finalized.
Mika successfully claimed a campus room equipped with eight therapy beds as the official activity space for The Society.
The core members were also locked in. Aside from herself as President, Mika had recruited seven or eight classmates, and even managed to bring on a few upperclassmen from her major to help anchor the organization.
This way, even if she had to step away for her own plans, The Society could continue running smoothly, providing free rehab to students who needed it.
Before she knew it, Saturday arrived.
Quincy had already texted the party location to Mika's phone.
At noon, Mika whipped up a quick lunch for Mrs. Remington, then returned to her room to open the seven or eight packages she had lugged back that morning.
