This slap carried the full force of Mika's strength, instantly turning Seraphina's soft cheek bright red.
It was the first time in her life Seraphina had ever been slapped. She looked up at Mika, both pained and humiliated, a trace of venom flashing in her eyes.
But the next second, seeing the stunned, open-mouthed expressions of the crowd behind Mika, she instantly sobered up and suppressed her temper.
She was just about to continue explaining when she heard Mika's trembling, choked-up voice.
"Seraphina, I treated you as my best friend, and this... is how you see me?"
The words were overwhelmingly sorrowful, suppressing disappointment, anger, humiliation, and a myriad of other emotions.
Mika's eyes had turned red the moment the slap landed.
Now, turbulent tears swirled continuously in her eyes, welling up wave after wave, but she stubbornly refused to let them fall.
Seraphina visibly panicked.
Mika's emotions were so fierce and raw that even she couldn't tell for a moment if she was just playing the victim, or if she was truly utterly disappointed in her.
Seraphina stammered, struggling to explain. "No, those were just my thoughts this afternoon.
When I apologized to you and you chose to make up with me without hesitation, I knew you didn't think that way..."
Mika raised a hand to cut off her next words, instead turning with tear-filled eyes to look at Lucas, who sat at the other main seat.
"What about you? Did you think that way too?"
Her voice trembled, her tone suppressing a sob so deeply she nearly lost her voice.
As if afraid she wouldn't be able to hold back her tears, she lowered her head to compose herself for a long while before gritting her teeth and asking word by word.
"Were you also worried that I saved you just to get close to you and climb the social ladder?"
Lucas looked at her bloodshot, tear-filled eyes, and the color of his own eyes instantly darkened, turning unreadable.
Scrutiny, hesitation, and guilt intertwined in his gaze. His cold eyes remained fixed on Mika, his thin lips pressed tightly together.
He didn't answer.
It wasn't an admission of guilt, but rather a sense of unmentionable shame.
