The Golden Lycans (Ella) novel Chapter 23

Combat Class-Part 2

*Ella**

Later that afternoon, we are having all sorts of ridiculous fun in the sixth form common room, carving pumpkins for display around the school. It was never something my family bothered with at home, but I was enjoying this creative, rather messy yet silly activity with my new friends.

“Oh wow, that’s…well what can I say, that’s horrendous!” Freya laughs at my hideous creation.

“I thought the idea was that it’s meant to be scary?” I reply, turning the poor pumpkin around to look at me. I frown at it, thinking I was basically a genius when it came to this activity, it looks deeply troubled.

I set it aside and grab another pumpkin, starting hollowing it out.

“Check out this one, it’s a kitty! and, it’s even got whiskers!” Annabelle gushes, turning hers around to show off her handiwork.

“Meeeow,” I reply with a laugh, just as we are approached by a tall redhead. I’d seen her around from time to time, and she joins us from a loud group of girls nearby.

“Aww, Freya, that pumpkin is just adorable,” she cooes in an annoyingly fake tone.

“Wasn’t going for adorable, but thanks…I guess!” Freya replies bluntly.

“I’m Verity,” she begins, looking down at me briefly with a frown. She turns away from Annabelle and I in an obvious way, in order to give more attention to Freya. I exchange a sideways look with

Annabelle; we knew what was coming.

Freya looks at her with her best fake smile, waiting for it…

“Your brother…he isn’t seeing anyone, is he?” she says, cutting to the chase. I exchange another look with Annabelle, and we both chuckle quietly. We both know that Freya finds this highly annoying, so it makes it even funnier to us. Freya silently stares at her impassively for several seconds with her fake smile still plastered across her face. Just as I think she was about to plonk her hollowed out pumpkin on the top of Verity’s head, she calmly says, “No, I’m so sorry Verity but…he isn’t.”

Annabelle and I immediately exchange a confused look at this before snapping back to gauge Verity’s reaction to Freya’s clear lie.

What was Freya doing?

“Oh really? But that’s not what I’ve heard…” Verity says, looking quite put out and a little flustered.

Freya looks at her with mock sympathy before she continues.

“Oh, no honey, because he’s…dating my friend Ella, here.”

Wait….What?

Clag

I snap my head toward Freya now, shooting her a clear ‘what the heck’ look, before Verity turns to look at me herself, proceeding to look me up and down.

“Her?” she asks bluntly with a look of disgust.

How dare she visually assess me like that, I think to myself..

“Yep. So sorry. Please leave us,” Freya says with an edge of finality in her voice. Verity sighs and gets up, going back over to her friends while looking rather put out. They start whispering at once, glancing at me every few seconds. I feel a little on edge, now…

“What the hell was that?!” I hiss at Freya. I am fairly annoyed at her now, particularly since I only turned Austin down based on her recommendation. She shrugs helplessly, clearly a little surprised at herself too.

“I’m sorry, it was a bit of a spur of the moment thing…I have had just about had enough of all these girls coming up to me asking the same question. Every. Damn. Day. Plus it’s been so much worse lately since he started becoming a beefed up gym rat with Ollie,” Freya says before then looking defensive, “anyway, she’s a she-wolf, she should know what he’s like by now. Don’t worry, I just wanted to get rid of her and have a laugh, I won’t do it again.”

For the next hour we continue to butcher some extremely unlucky pumpkins, before we head to dinner.

Dinner is exceptional, as always. My last school had tried to do fajitas a few times and had failed miserably on every occasion. Exton did it properly, though. Floury tortillas, mexican rice, bowls of tasty guacamole, soured cream, crispy lettuce and of course, piles of delicious cheese. It was thoroughly enjoyable.

Things seemed…off, though…

“Has anyone else noticed that people keep throwing dirty looks at us?” Annabelle asks, giving an exaggerated look back toward one of the other girls in our year.
