“W-w-wait…so…you think Ella is Austin’s mate? You think he will become the next Golden Lycan?
Because…he’s so…boring?” I exclaim, almost not believing what I am saying. He nods without a
hint of disbelief.
“To be as powerful as the last Golden Lycan, to wield it responsibly…for in the wrong hands such a power would be most destructive,” he muses before he looks back at me, “I can only hope so. What a sight it would be to see, before I leave this earth. My great-grandson, our future heir, the
next Golden Lycan.”
I frown as I remember my conversation with Austin in the gym after their failed date. I feel a pang in the pit of my stomach. I rub my forehead with my hand and groan guiltily.
“Austin told me something the evening they had their date. He was all excited and looked like he’d had some great revelation, and he told me that he was sure she was his mate,” I admit. My frown turns to sadness as I continue, “and…rather than believe my honest and true brother, I told him he was crazy, and I told him to stay away from her.”
I anxiously run my hands through my hair, irritated at myself for not believing my brother.
not concern yourself, everything that has been happening is happening for a reason,” he gently, “Austin told me of their first human interaction. He saw her trip over a tree root while out on a run, which also happened to have disappeared once they looked for it. It was no accident, just like her wanting to move to the countryside from a city was no accident. Choosing this school was also no accident. Nature is bringing the two together whether they realise it or not. Austin already feels it as he is close to adulthood, but it could still take time for young Ella, particularly as she is Fae and not Lycan,” he says, looking out the window at the grey sky. I sit quietly for a minute, thinking about what she’d said after their date and Austin’s interpretation of what she’d said.
“I actually think she might…everything that happened last night kicked off after they kissed again, after she’d been doing her level best to avoid him since their date. I watched them, she seemed like she was in some sort of trance. After their date, she didn’t want to get hurt should Austin find his mate, so she broke things off in spite of how strongly she felt during their date. Why would she just go ahead and kiss him again unless she just…couldn’t help it? Any time I’ve heard people talking about mate bonds, it’s always like they just can’t help the way they feel, they just can’t stay away from that person. The way it looked last night… it seemed exactly like that,” I exclaim. “Perhaps she does feel it. But I doubt it’s something she would be expecting, nor something she would yet understand,” Grandfather says. I look at him in shock and disbelief.

“Well, when she finds out it’s entirely possible and quite possibly likely?” I exclaim, “what if Austin is
right? They need to know!”
To my dismay, my grandfather shakes his head and looks sternly at me.
“I’m sorry, Freya, but the most important thing is that we do not interfere, the same way we don’t interfere with other mate bonds. You cannot tell either of them about that part of our history. Do n ot encourage Ella. For the moment, she has work to do, and she needs to focus. Moreover, their bond must be pure. If it is destined, it will be. The path to her realising what is happening between the two of them, could be a very important path in her journey of self-discovery. Enough has already happened without any intervention, so we shall see where the pieces of the puzzle fit together next.”
“I understand what you’re saying, but this is quite a substantial piece of information for me to keep from them,” I reply, sounding frustrated, a scowl on my face, “they should know it’s absolutely possible, they’ve been driving themselves crazy over this! All this time they could well be mates, and now they’re purposefully avoiding each other just so Ella doesn’t get hurt!”
“I know you are frustrated about this, particularly now you have this knowledge. It has been very difficult for me to see Austin so conflicted the way he has been lately, but you cannot say a thing. You know you cannot interfere. Ella is going to need you now more than ever,” he says kindly. I scowl at him but nod. I wasn’t happy, but we did have strict social rules about bonds. I certainly didn’t want to ruin anything for either of them, I loved Austin and I deeply cared about protecting Ella a great deal.
“Anyway…I was thinking about how best to coax Ella’s faerie abilities out into the open. May I suggest you show her the greenhouse? I think that could well be the perfect place for her to get started. The earth element was the strongest for the Fae, so earth seems like a good place to
start.”
He produces a key from a drawer in his desk, and pushes it across the table towards me.

The car speeds along the motorway, the driver of the car determined to reach their destination before nightfall.
Seventy miles down he thinks to himself as he nears his destination. He had a job to do, otherwise his family and pack would be at risk, and despite how they’d treated him, he couldn’t let that happen. He changes lanes, merging onto another motorway, now heading due south…

< What if Austin is Right?

Annabelle and I follow Freya down the sports corridor and into the sports hall.

“It’s not the gym mat storage area is it?” Annabelle snorted, “because I have to tell you Freya, people know about that place… if ya catch my drift.”
Freya laughs and shakes her head, silently marching across the length of the hall toward a little fire exit door at the far end. She pushes the metal bar, opening it to the outside.
We step through, and I immediately see where we were going. I am curious as to why I hadn’t noticed this building before during one of my many runs, but perhaps it was always hidden from view by the sports hall.
It is a massive greenhouse with a two-foot-high brick foundation. It was about thirty metres long and twenty metres wide.
Freya takes a key out of her back pocket and unlocks the doors to the greenhouse. We step inside, a musty smell hitting our noses immediately.
“It hasn’t been used in quite a few years, as you can probably tell,” she says, looking around at a mass of dead ivy hanging from the rooftop, twigs and dead branches littered the floor, numerous plant pots housing dead stalks dotted around here and there. There is a dried up fountain in the middle, and a large arched bench sitting in front of an array of dead rose bushes. There was nothing living in here at all, to me it feels miserable and dead.
“Why here?” I ask Freya, tracing a dead vine snaking up the side of the arch over the bench.
“Our mum used to work here about ten years ago, when we had students who studied a class around gardening and the like. Might’ve been Elves or Fauns? I can’t remember, it’s not important. Obviously, no one has done anything here for a very long time, so nobody comes here. I thought it might be the perfect place for you to practice…stuff. Have a go at your elemental magic, figure things out without anyone bothering you,” she says, gesturing around the place, “earth and water for definite.”
I slowly nod in agreement, looking around at this large but relatively secret space. I realise that this was actually a perfect place to do what I needed to do without being disturbed.
I just wished I had some idea of what to do, or even how to get started. I desperately wish that I had someone to show me.
What I needed, was a teacher.
