I had been taken aback by Freya’s description of the ‘modern Luna’; I was very surprised. But I realised on our walk down, that I’d done my reading from a lot of very old books, when I decided to find out more about Lycans. Of course, a book that was over a hundred years old, was going to be
socially outdated.
After our exchange in our room I had an inkling that somehow, Freya knew about our bond. She had directed a few comments at me with some pointed tenacity. I felt like I was lying to her, by not
coming clean, but it was still all on upheaval, in my mind.
I enter the hall and immediately pause, stopping in my tracks as I see Austin in the flesh for the first time in over two weeks. Everything I’d felt for him comes flooding back to me, causing my
heart beat to soar.
I look at him from across the hall for a few seconds, feeling so deeply attracted to him that my
breath halts entirely.
While he is still the most handsome man I have ever laid eyes on, I also can’t help but notice how d own he looks. I suddenly, badly want to talk to him, but it isn’t the time nor the place.
It was too public, really, because I didn’t think I’d be able to control myself.
Still, I opt to sit on the opposite side of the table so I don’t get too distracted by him, no matter how much I wanted to look at his handsome face and hope to glimpse his charismatic smile.
But, sitting here now in the hall, the pull in my core is approaching being unbearable, a strange sensation like an invisible hand tugging at my heart, through my spine, dragging my attention. posteriorly as I sit there with my back to him. I try to concentrate on eating my food, but it is difficult. I am deep in thought when Will suddenly takes a seat opposite me in front of Freya’s food and rips off a section of my naan bread.
I tut at him as he stuffs it into his mouth.
“Do you always steal people’s food?” Annabelle asks, a cheeky look on her face. Will turns to her
and his expression is quite complex for a moment.
“Hi. I don’t believe we’ve officially been introduced; which right now seems like a great pity. I am Will,” he said, holding out his hand. I know Annabelle is a big admirer of Will’s, so I am not surprised when this exchange goes so well. She shakes his hand and a strange, girly laugh I’d never heard
from her before, escapes her quite suddenly.

“I’m Annabelle…or some call me AB, or whatever. Call me whatever you want,” she laughs, fluttering her eyelashes. I am trying very hard to suppress a laugh at this display, for I’d never seen Annabelle act like this. But perhaps she talked a big game, but was as nervous and inexperienced as the rest of us.
“Anyway, quickly, before the barracuda comes back,” Will says, casting his eyes over to wherever Freya was, somewhere behind me, “I have an invitation for you. Every Monday and Thursday evenings at seven, a bunch of us are starting a combat class of our own. A type of magic class aimed at combat and defense, a bit like the morning ones except these aren’t physical. I think you
should come. At the very least you’d be able to practice elemental stuff on a few of us here sinde
we would be immune to fire, for example. I just want to help to keep pushing you forwards. I think
it could help,” he adds.
I nod in agreement.
“I’m in, that sounds like an amazing idea. Lord knows I could use the distraction this week.
Obviously what happened in Regents Park didn’t go that well so I definitely need help in that department,” I reply. He smiles broadly. Annabelle simply sighs while staring at him, not listening to anything that I’ve said.
“Honestly, the others really cannot wait to meet you,” he says as he stands up from the seat. He
turns to Annabelle, “it was wonderful to meet you… Belle.”
He quickly departs, probably having spotted Freya on her way back.
“Oh goddess he smells good too. Ooh I wonder if he’s a good kisser,” Annabelle muses as she continues to watch Will walking through the hall.
After dinner, Freya and I go back to our room and we decide to watch a movie before getting an
early night before classes in the morning.
We get our pyjamas on and settle down in front of Freya’s laptop. She selects a soppy romance which was probably the last genre I wanted to see at this moment.
I still had the decision about whether to accept Austin or not and that was constantly rattling around in my head. It consumed my every waking moment, particularly since we had all returned. I badly wanted to embrace it all, embrace him and his life, but I felt so scared to do so.
What was wrong with me?
Was it because of all the warnings I’d heard, about the darkness? About Erebus?
Was I afraid of stepping up and embracing the wpoer that came with being bonded to Austin?

“Isn’t it just amazing,” Freya muses, eyes fixed on the screen, “how two people can be so… soul-shatteringly perfect for each other? Like, destined. Fated. Spiritually magnetised, star-aligned
perfection.”
I glance at her, raising à brow.
“That’s a lot of adjectives.”
She ignores me.
“Apparently,” I add, reaching lazily for a handful of peanuts from our sad little snack bowl, “I used to
think the whole soulmate thing was ridiculous. Like, completely unhinged. But… maybe there’s something to it.”
“Mmm,” She’s smiling now, but it’s that dangerous Freya-smile. The one that means she’s already six steps ahead in some conversation you didn’t realise you were having.
On screen, the two leads are striding toward each other on a bridge-of course it’s a bridge-in a breathtakingly scenic setting, framed by golden light and conveniently dramatic clouds. The dark-haired male lead grabs the blonde woman’s hand, declaring his undying, everlasting and fierce
love.
My eyes narrow slightly at the screen. Why does every romantic declaration in fiction happen in the most picturesque spot imaginable? Bridges. Rain. Forests bathed in moonlight. Meanwhile, my first kiss with Austin had been… well, also on a bridge.
“If only real life were a movie,” Freya sighs wistfully, hugging a cushion. “Then we’d all have spontaneous public declarations, urgent kisses, and emotionally convenient weather.”
“Hmm,” I hum in agreement. The male lead tucks a strand of hair behind the woman’s ear, cradles her face, and bam-full rom-com kiss. Passionate.
And then the rain starts. Because of course it does.
I’m still watching, eyes half-glazed, when Freya says, far too casually, “It must be getting really hard
to ignore the pull you feel in your chest towards Austin, huh?”
“Yeah,” I sigh, still watching as the characters cling to each other, drenched and gasping, reminding me heavily of my first kiss with Austin, “it’s getting really unbearable.”
Silence.
I blink.
Then slowly-horribly-the full weight of what I’ve just said registers in my brain.
My eyes snap to Freya, who is already staring at me with a face like she’s just caught me cheating
