He’s Like a Brother to Me
*Austin***
By Wednesday morning, I was already in desperate need of some downtime due to how difficult Oll
ie had been since the full moon on the weekend. He was turning eighteen on Saturday and I knew what he was going through. A little. I had definitely gotten off lightly due to the control and focus. that Atlas and I share, as we had a relatively smooth week prior to my eighteenth just ten days ago Supposedly, it was worse the higher rank you were, but I didn’t think that was the case; I think it had everything to do with inhibition and Ollie sadly didn’t have much.
For me, there had been a constant itch to shift throughout the whole week, which had led me to shift every evening for several hours. This was useful as I often did my patrols late at night, but it was only because I could remain focused.
Ollie, being someone who happily gave in to his Lycan instincts more than most, wasn’t having as much luck at containing himself as I had…and things had gotten a little out of hand…
On Monday morning, he’d gone overboard in combat class and broken two dummies. He then put his first into a wall after being scolded by Chase. On Monday evening, he’d almost shifted in front of a group of humans in the atrium in his haste to get out of the building. I’d quickly grabbed and binned the tattered pair of jeans and sweatshirt before any of the humans saw them, after he’d
bounded out of view.
On Tuesday, he ate a substantial amount of food at all three mealtimes which we just couldn’t hide from the human students. Luckily, they just thought he was a glutton. Then, before shifting in the evening, he’d been in the gym for three testosterone-heavy hours, lifting some very heavy weights which only further fueled his strange behaviour.
By Wednesday, I watch as Ollie tears into a massive plate piled high with bacon, eggs, and sausage. The sheer volume of food makes me a little uneasy.
“Got enough protein there, Ols?” Dominic smirks as he takes the seat opposite him.
Ollie grunts in response, barely acknowledging him as he continues to shovel food into his mouth. His gaze is locked on something-or, someone-across the hall, his eyes fixed and distant.
“Don’t forget you’re on double patrol tonight,” I remind him pointedly.
He chews a few more times before slowly shifting his gaze toward me.
“Yep. Can’t wait,” he replies, monotone, before his eyes flick back to their original target.
I frown and turn in my seat, trying to figure out what has him so distracted.

Or whom, Atlas reminds me, as I realise he has been staring at Freya.
Oh man, I keep forgetting to talk to him about it. I mean… It’s Freya. It’s awkward. I reply.

We have a highly regarded beta about to come of age and an alpha of noble heritage…consider the timing of it… we have always known THIS was a possibility, Atlas reminds me.
I know, and it’s not escaped my notice how he’s been a few times since the summer. Definitely since Christmas day when we were playing Twister. That got a bit…weird…but I just thought he was being
Ollie, I admit.
Without a word, Ollie suddenly stands, his plate cleared, and leaves.
“Aus, are you sure he’s up for patrol tonight?” Dominic asks in a low voice.
I exhale, considering it.
“Ollie never revises like the rest of us-he doesn’t need to. Besides, the urge to shift the week before… it’s always stronger. He’ll be in Artemis this evening anyway.” I pause, trying to sound more confident than I feel. “He should be fine. It’s Ollie.”
But as I stare after him, I can’t shake the doubt creeping in. If I didn’t have a mountain of mocks to study for, I might’ve kept a closer eye on him.
***Freya***
I stare back across the hall, my mind spinning in metaphorical circles as Mira flits around anxiously. Ollie has been sitting there for a full twenty minutes, eyes locked on me as he
demolishes a massive plate of food. It’s more than a little unnerving, and yet… I can’t seem to look
away.
Those baby blue eyes of his hold me captive.
…Fuck sake.
In three days he is going to come for us. When it starts to hit you more, you’ll come around, Mira says
jubilantly.
I don’t know what to do…and you don’t know that. I reply..
Well, YOU do. It’s been building to this and you’ve known it since that day you went to the gym to find Austin. You looked at him differently and you FELT it.
Mira, he’s like a BROTHER to me, I reply wearily.
Interesting comparison as you’ve never had such steamy thoughts about Austin, Mira roars with

Okay, FINE. But…he’s so experienced. I’m going to be so rubbish. What if he keeps comparing me, I said, revealing my real fear.
Oh he assuredly is…but it’s to OUR advantage – there won’t be any awkward moments. No fumbling around…all of which I’ve experienced in previous blends and it’s not great. Not this time though, honey,
you’ll only ever be touched by a seasoned lover who knows exactly how to pleasure you and honestly?
IM READY! Mira says confidently.
I dropped my head onto the table.
“Mira on one again?” Ella murmurs.
I glance up, only to find Ollie still staring at me. Quickly, I shift my gaze away, focusing instead on my untouched bowl of porridge. With a sigh, I push it aside.
“She’s literally like a dog with a bone. Except, you know… a dog with a boner,” I mutter, exasperated.
***Ella***
I tap my stylus impatiently on my tablet. I am once again spending yet another evening studying in the bedroom for yet another mock exam…instead of enjoying a normal evening of intense kissing with my boyfriend like I wanted; but I can’t concentrate. My mind keeps drifting to the window, into the darkness outside. I sigh and sit up, switching off my tablet. Freya had gone for a ‘wolf run’, as I liked to call them. It now seemed like a good idea to me too, well a faerie run at least. I’d spent too much time cooped up inside over the past week or so, while studying for the mocks.
I also really miss Austin.
I hadn’t seen him much during the last week. I knew he’d been finding Ollie hard to deal with, and it was added stress he didn’t need. I was intrigued to hear how the Lycans tended to behave in the run-up to their eighteenth birthday, mainly because Will had been with me before his at Christmas, and he had seemed totally fine. Perhaps it was due to his hybrid nature? His strict control over himself? I didn’t know. I guess it differed from person to person.
I get changed into my running gear, adding a layer of thermals on for the cold air outside. It was freezing, not that it ever really bothered me that much anymore, since my inner faerie had been released; nature was nature. Being outside in any weather was where I was happiest, and at night now I could now see so clearly, ever since I’d drawn energy from the moon.
Stepping out of the school’s front doors, I take a deep breath of the crisp air before breaking into a steady run along the perimeter. My breath escapes into the night in visible puffs, muscles
