Fairground
*Ella***
After Chase’s Sunday combat class we met up with Annabelle in the main hall for breakfast.
“Did you enjoy the fairground?” I ask as we sit down with our trays. She arches a manicured
eyebrow at me.
“How do you know Will took me to a fairground?”
“I suggested it to him, he had wanted to take you to a driving range.”
Annabelle laughs lightly.
“Probably the best decision for his male ego. Have I ever told you how amazing I am at golf?”
“No, and I’m surprised you even play. It’s kinda boring,” I reply, surprised at this nugget of
knowledge.
“Oh it is, but do you know how many doctors play golf?” Annabelle says happily.
Freya snorts.
Claim
“Maybe the old doctors,” Freya said, “I’ve never met anyone so driven to meet particular people, you would’ve made a better mate for Ollie than me…”
Annabelle laughs at this comment.
“Please, are you kidding? You guys make total sense. The next alpha’s beta being bonded to the alpha’s sister? That is a strong pairing.”
I listen to their back and forth, wondering if Annabelle had any inkling about what was going to happen in the near future between her and Will. I wondered if she was any closer to feeling their
bond.
Sitting at the table right now I had to admit that Will had a point about using skills before losing them. Aura reading had definitely been useful to Will on a number of occasions, so I sit there and concentrate on Annabelle, slowly bringing her aura into view. It took a fair bit of effort at first, but I figured it would get easier over time.
It was girliness personified.
Annabelle’s aura was mainly a dance of pastel blues and pinks. It was soft, and the colours swirled around slowly. I had the distinct feeling that this meant she was happy, content and unconcerned. I did not see the same feature in hers that I’d seen in Will’s regarding their bond, though.

Annabelle didn’t feel anything yet. I envied her as I watched the colours swirling around. She was
so relaxed and so happy, no questions about herself or her future, no worries about menacing Rybrids.
I shift my focus to Freya, bringing an aura similar to Austin’s into view, except there was far less gold and an abundance of a deep purple-pink which complimented the navy beautifully. There were spikes of a few other colours here and there, jagged edges and sharp points, giving me the impression that Freya’s aura was displaying her ongoing emotional conflict around Ollie. Like Will’s though, I saw the signs of a bond. It was like golden webs of electricity randomly shooting off in the direction of where Ollie was sat with Austin and the rest of their ‘hoops group’ on the other side
of the hall.
“… Anyway, I might as well enjoy the time I have with Will and make the most of it before he gets an absolute fox dropped into his lap in due course,” I tune in to hear Annabelle say. I felt a pang of guilt that I couldn’t tell her what I knew, that she had already been blessed with an amazing mate but
she just didn’t know it yet.
“You never know AB, you might not have to stalk doctors on golf courses. It could happen for you,” Freya shrugs with a sympathetic expression.
I get up from the table with my coffee and wander over to Austin. He glances up as I approach and looks at me with a mix of adoration and pride. I wonder if I’ll ever get used to it, and also whether he will always look at me this way.
“Good morning,” he says with a broad smile.
“Hello yourself,” I reply happily, perching on the chair next to him.
“We were just discussing the ski trip,” Austin says.
“Oh, yeah, are you going?” I ask excitedly, realising I’d not even talked to Austin about it. We had both been so busy the last two weeks due to mock exams, we hadn’t spent much time alone
together.
“It was a bit of a debate at first. With the increase of rogues around recently it didn’t seem a great idea for the school to lose several fighters for the two days before half term. But I met with representatives of the other packs last night and we worked something out. We can just about cover our bases and have everyone that wanted to go on the trip be able to go. It is a whole week but aside from the Thursday evening and the whole of Friday for the travelling before hand it’s during half term, so it should all be fine. Will is actually the main reason most of us can go, he’s not going and is planning to stay here that week. He is very strong.”
“So, who is going that I know, aside from Freya?” I ask.

“Me, Ols and Freya are, so don’t worry, you won’t be on your own,” Austin replies. I sip more of mý
coffee, feeling very happy to hear this news.
“Anyway…I got that stuff out of the way last night so we’d have today to actually do something now
the mocks are behind us,” he says quietly.
“Oh yeah, what did you have in mind?” I ask, keen to get out of Exton for the day.
“Meet me in the atrium in an hour,” he replies, checking his watch for a moment.
An hour and a half later we are pulling up to park at the fairground, just as he’d promised the other
evening.
“I have something to admit, I’ve never been to a fair,” I say with a pout as Austin pays our entrance
fee.
“Never?” he replies in surprise.
“Nope. I have sort of been on a ferris wheel, though,” I say happily as we walk through a turnstile.
“Let me guess, the London Eye?” Austin laugh.
“It counts,” I said defensively.
“No! It’s like the King of ferris wheels. It’s not a proper wheel unless you’re worried it might stop working halfway around, and you’re then left wondering if you’ll ever get down,” Austin jokes, wrapping his hand around mine.
“Don’t worry, if that happens I will save us by flying us to safety,” I teases.
“Right…I keep forgetting my girlfriend can actually fly,” he replies with a chuckle.
“Girlfriend, huh?” I ask, stopping in my tracks and giving him a lopsided smile. Austin draws closer
to me and puts his hands either side of the top of my hips, pulling me even closer.
“What would you have me call you?” He asks quietly, “especially after that performance in the
greenhouse?”
My heart starts drumming away as I recall the moment I’d been marked.
“I guess…but it just sounds so trivial compared to what it really is, though. We are linked with a
divine bond to each other.”
Austin looks up pensive for a moment as if considering what I’d said.
“Okay, I agree with you there. Girlfriend is too rudimentary.”

We come to a classic coconut shy and Austin hands over a few coins for us to play.
Claim
“fear you have a distinct advantage that quite a few people here don’t have,” I remark as Austin is handed two trays of balls for us to throw at the coconuts. He picks one up and throws it solidly at
one of the coconuts, knocking it clean off it’s perch. The guy running the shy rolls his eyes and
looks irritated.
“You may have a point, but I’ve worked hard to be this strong and I do play basketball quite a lot. My aim is therefore pretty damn good,” he replies with a laugh.
Ten minutes later we walk away from the coconut shy, with me clutching a prize.
“Seems fitting that the toy I win for you would be a plush wolf of all things,” Austin jokes as I clutch a grey and white wolf plush toy.
“Very. Although this one actually looks incredibly like Will’s wolf Fabian.”
We visit all the other games and we have a lot of fun. Austin typically hit the bell with an enthusiastic ring on the ‘test your strength, while I managed to get it only a third of the way up.
“Good grief, I need to get you into the gym,” he jokes as I jokingly flex my nonexistent biceps at
him.
“It would probably be a good idea at some point, I may have magic but I’m so weak,” I reply with a
frown.
“Good thing your boyfriend is a physical powerhouse then,” he says with a proud grin.
“That he is; he’s modest too,” I laugh, giving his large arm a squeeze.
After sharing a footlong hotdog we get in the queue for the bumper cars.
