Horace and Brittany weren’t sure about this.

“I’m tired,” Jessica interrupted. “I’m going back to my room to rest. I need to get a good night’s sleep so I can have a proper date with Stanley tomorrow.”

With that, Jessica headed back to her room.

Brittany frowned deeply. “What exactly is Stanley playing at? He just came to break off the engagement, and now he’s tangled up with Jessica again. What is he trying to do?”

Horace clenched his jaw. “I’m calling him.”

He pulled out his phone and dialed Stanley’s number.

The phone rang with a clear, melodious tone before Stanley’s low, smooth voice came through.

“Hello, Mr. Larson.”

Horace’s voice was cold. “Stanley, what game are you playing?”

“I’m not sure what you mean.”

“Jessica just came home and said you asked her out to dinner tomorrow.”

“That’s right.”

“You came over to call off the engagement, saying you wanted to be with Wendy. We respected that. But now, you’re tangled up with Jessica again. You’re going back and forth between two women. What are you trying to do? Do you think this is fair to Wendy?” Horace said.

Brittany’s voice was sharp with disapproval. “Wendy is a good woman. If you care about her, then be with her wholeheartedly. Don’t keep stirring things up with Jessica. This kind of behavior hurts all three of you.”

Stanley listened silently to their accusations before replying, “Mr. Larson, do you really know what kind of person Ida is?”

Horace was taken aback. “Why are you bringing Ida into this?”

Stanley answered calmly, “This isn’t something I can explain in a few words. Just know I have my reasons for what I’m doing. Come over tomorrow, and you’ll understand the truth.”

With that, Stanley ended the call.

Brittany looked at Horace. “What does he mean by that?”

Horace shook his head. “We’ll find out tomorrow.”

Jessica slept soundly and woke up early to get ready. It had been a long time since she and Stanley had gone out on a date, and she wanted to look dazzling enough to outshine Wendy.

She slipped into a custom–made dress and twirled in front of the mirror, pleased with how she looked. Then, she grabbed her phone and dialed Stanley’s number.

The phone rang over and over, but no one answered.

Stanley wasn’t picking up.

Why wouldn’t Stanley answer? Had he changed his mind?
