Just then, a cab sped up and slammed to a stop right beside Halsey and Madeline. The driver rolled down the window, his deep voice commanding. “Get in.”
Halsey’s eyes lit up. She reached out and opened the back door. “Maddy, get in!”
Madeline slipped into the back seat, while Halsey opened the front passenger door and climbed in.
“Drive!”
The cab took off.
Gilbert and his men arrived, shouting, “Stop!”
But it was too late. The cab roared away.
Frustrated, Gilbert put his hands on his hips. “Damn it! I’m gonna get that stupid cab driver who just ruined my plans! Bring me my car keys!”
“Here you go,” one of his black–clad bodyguards said, handing over a set.
Gilbert jumped into his Ferrari and slammed the gas pedal. Tonight, he was determined to bring Halsey back.
Inside the cab, Halsey glanced at the driver. “Thank you.”
Then, she froze. She recognized him–it was the scar–faced man she had met before.
He was dressed all in black, wearing a black baseball cap pulled low and a black mask covering most of his face. Only his cold, sharp eyes were visible.
Those eyes, sharp and unforgettable, looked almost exactly like Dwight’s.
Halsey blinked, surprised to see him again. Was he a cab driver?
Suddenly, Gilbert’s Ferrari roared up behind them.
Madeline tensed. “He’s catching up!”
Halsey looked in the rearview mirror–sure enough, Gilbert was closing in. This lunatic just wouldn’t give up!
“Drive faster! Lose that car behind us!” Halsey urged.
The man glanced coolly at the Ferrari behind, then slammed the gas.
Gilbert ground his teeth and hit the accelerator. There was no way a cab could outrun a Ferrari!
Gilbert’s driving skills were top–notch, and he quickly pulled up alongside the cab. Sliding down his window, he shouted arrogantly, “Stop the car! Do you know who I am? How dare you take my woman!”
Halsey panicked, worried the driver would stop. “Don’t stop! I’ll pay you extra!”
The driver showed no expression. He simply said, “Hold tight,” before hitting the gas.
