Halsey froze for a moment when she heard Madeline calling the man “Dwight“.

the same mistake.

Quickly, Halsey said, “He’s not Dwight.”

Madeline hadn’t seen Dwight in three years. He was the only blood relative she had left in this world, and she was sure she wouldn’t mistake him for anyone else–she was convinced this man was her brother.

“I don’t believe you! Take off your mask! I want to see your face!” Madeline cried; she insisted on seeing his face.

“Maddy!” Halsey tried to stop her.

But the man said, “Fine.”

He lifted the mask from his face, revealing a disfigured visage.

Madeline’s eyes widened in shock, and she sucked in a sharp breath. “Your face…”

The man pulled the mask back up. “Do you still think I’m your brother?”

Madeline hesitated. “I…”

“I’ve got things to do. Bye.”

He hit the gas, and the cab sped away.

Madeline took a step forward. “Dwight!”

Halsey held Madeline tightly. “I know how much you want to believe that, but he really isn’t Dwight.”

Tears rolled down Madeline’s cheeks. “Where the hell is Dwight? Why hasn’t he come back for three years? Has he forgotten

about us?”

Halsey’s eyes grew red as the pain deep inside her stirred. She was hurting even more than Madeline.

Madeline continued, “I miss him so much! Why did he just disappear? Where could he possibly be?”

All Halsey could do was hold Madeline tighter.

Madeline was crushed.

She was leaving for the research base the next day, so Halsey took her inside so she could shower and get some rest. Standing by the window, Halsey looked out over the city lights–beautiful but distant. The man she was searching for was gone.

Dwight had been missing for three years.

Suddenly, Halsey thought of the cab driver. Was he really just a driver? Those cold, clear eyes of his–they truly did resemble Dwight’s.

On a whim, Halsey pulled out her phone and found the cab driver’s WhatsApp account. His picture was just a black square–quiet and mysterious.

She checked his status updates, but they were empty too.
