No man could stand being challenged like that; especially Gilbert, who had always been deeply bothered by Dwight’s shadow hanging over him.
Gilbert sneered coldly at Halsey, “I’m going to make you pay tonight!”
He reached out to grab her collar, his fingers aiming to tear at her clothes.
But in that moment, Halsey pulled out a ca Gilbert’s eyes.
of pepper spray she had been hiding at her waist and sprayed it straight into
Gilbert hadn’t expected her to come armed. The “Argh!”
liquid burned fiercely, and he howled in pain.
Seizing the chance, Halsey shoved him away. “You think I came here unprepared? I bought this pepper spray especially for you!”
The last time Gilbert had almost crossed the line with her, it was only because of the cab driver’s timely arrival that she wasn’t taken. Since then, she had always carried the spray.
Gilbert stood, glaring at her with furious eyes. “My patience is running thin! Are you really refusing to marry me? I suggest you think carefully–if you don’t, Lincoln Enterprise will be finished!”
Halsey met his gaze with icy calm. “If my parents knew I was marrying you just to save Lincoln Enterprise and sacrifice my happiness for the company’s peace, they’d blame me, too.”
Gilbert laughed bitterly. “Fine! Don’t say I didn’t warn you. I’m going to find Mr. Payne now. Just you wait!”
With that, Gilbert slammed the door behind him.
Halsey watched his retreating figure, her brow furrowed. Did Gilbert really think she would break down and give in? No way.
She would find her own way to save Lincoln Enterprise.
Pulling out her phone, she called Cyril’s assistant, Riley Blair. The call connected quickly.
“Hello, Ms. Halsey,” Riley answered respectfully.
“Can you find out where Mr. Payne is right now? I need to see him
Even though Gilbert had the upper hand by being friends with William, Halsey had to try–she couldn’t let the partnership with Lincoln Enterprise fall apart.
Soon, Riley responded, “Mr. Payne is at a private club playing golf today.”
“That’s perfect. Send me the address. I’m heading there now.”
“Sure thing.”
Riley quickly sent the location. Halsey left the hotel and went straight to the private club.
Half an hour later, Halsey arrived at the club, ready to find William.
However, the receptionist stopped her. “Hi, there. Have you made a reservation?”
Halsey paused. “You need to make a reservation to enter?”
Yes. This is a private, high–end club. Only the wealthy and influential get in–and only with a reservation.”
Her heart sank. “I want to see Mr. Payne. Could you let him know I’m here? Maybe he’ll agree to see me.
