Chapter 186

Third Person’s POV

He looked down at her, his breath warm against her skin. His Alpha aura, usually so sharp, felt unusually tender in that moment. You don’t have to act so tough around me, Trista. If you’re tired, just say so. Let me be the one you lean onjust like when we first met.

She lowered her eyes, avoiding the searing intensity of his gaze, and said nothing.

Cassian carried her toward the waiting Bentley.

But just as the driver scrambled to open the door, a sharp, highpitched voice shattered the fragile peace.

Daddy!

Algernon bolted out of the shadows, slamming into Cassian’s legs. His dirty little hands gripped Cassian’s trousers as he wailed, tears streaming down his face.

Cassian’s aura turned to ice instantly. Without a word, he set Trista back down on her feet.

Samantha came rushing up, looking frantic. She swatted the boy’s backside a couple of times, her voice pitched with a calculated kind of panic. Algernon! How many times have I told you? Don’t call him that!

Daddy! I don’t want to go back to that cold house with Mommy! I want you to play with the New Year fireworks with me!

The boy was throwing a fullblown tantrum now, his shrieks echoing through the quiet neighborhood.

When Cassian didn’t immediately move to pick him up, the pup spun around and scrambled into the back of the black Bentley like a professional.

Samantha looked at Cassian with a helpless, fragile expression. I’m just an omega, CassianI’m not strong enough to handle him. Maybe you should be the one to pull him out.

As she spoke, she shot a quick, predatory glance toward Trista to gauge her reaction.

Cassian had already admitted the boy’s bloodline to the Clan Leader and signed a pact to keep the truth under wraps.

Now, standing in front of his actual Luna, he was backed into a cornerhe had to acknowledge the kid.

Cassian’s dark, heavy gaze locked onto Trista’s face.

He tried to sound detached, clinical. I’ll call a cab for you. Go back home and get some rest.

Trista stood still in the biting wind, her beige coat looking far too thin for the night.

She tilted her head up, meeting his hollow gaze, and managed a faint, ghost of a smile.

Don’t look at me like that. I’m fine,” she said softly. I’ll just call a ride myself.”

The more effortless her smile became, the darker Cassian’s face grew.

Chapter 186

Trista held out a bag of healing salves to Samantha. His wrist is injured. Make sure he applies this regularly. You wouldn’t want it to leave a sear

Samantha flicked a nervous look at Cassian before tentatively taking the bag.

Seeing his face look like a thundercloud, she quickly bowed her head to Trista. “I am so sorry, Lune Trista f couldn’t control him. I didn’t mean to cause trouble for you.”

Trista shook her head, her eyes dead and clear. It’s New Year’s Eve. You’re family; you should be together. It was my mistake for not thinking of it sooner. From now on, I’ll make sure to remind him to spend these big holidays with you.

Before the words had even fully landed, Cassian stepped forward and roughly snatched the medicine bag back from Samantha. Samantha, get in the car with the kid. Now,he barked.

Samantha gave Trista a wrongedlook before scurrying into the backseat.

Cassian slammed the door shut with a heavy thud. He turned back and grabbed Trista’s cold hand, gripping it so hard it was almost painful.

Don’t overthink this,he said, his words coming out in

home in a bit.

a rushed blur. I’ll handle this mess and be back

Trista smoothly pulled her hand back. Her voice was a flatline. If it gets too late, don’t bother. Just stay there and be with her and the boy.

Cassian stared at her.

That absolute, smiling calm felt like a ton of lead on his chest, suffocating him.

When he didn’t move, Trista actually reached out and gave his back a gentle shove toward the car. If you’re not ready to go public with them yet, you should be more careful, she advised. Watch out for the paparazzi. And don’t worryI remember every line of our agreement. I’m not going to embarrass you in public, and I’m definitely not going to make a scene.

Trista!
