Cassian flipped open his laptop and plugged in the flash drive himself, beckoning her to take a look.
Trista hesitated, keeping her distance. “You’re sure you’re not playing me?”
Cassian met her gaze, his tone turning dead serious. “I told you—if you’re still feeling insecure, I’ll transfer the pack assets to you whenever you want. Ever since you came back, you’ve been pushing every single one of my boundaries. Did you follow even one rule in that agreement? Did I ever actually use my rank to punish you for it?”
Trista’s eyes flickered with uncertainty.
After a beat, she stepped forward and confirmed the files on the drive. She pulled it out and squeezed it tight in her fist.
Cassian closed the laptop and moved in, wrapping his arms around her waist. He looked down at her, his possessiveness on full display. “Trista, can we finally go to bed now?”
The look in his eyes was anything but subtle. Trista caught the hint immediately.
Just as she was trying to come up with an excuse to blow him off, Cassian’s phone buzzed.
He hesitated to answer, but Trista caught a glimpse of the caller ID: Samantha.
Trista reached over and hit the accept button for him, acting totally unbothered.
Samantha’s frantic voice cut through the room. “Cassian, something’s wrong! Algernon’s stomach is killing him—he’s screaming in pain. I’ve had a few drinks tonight and I can’t drive. Can you please take him to the healing center?”
Trista jumped on the opportunity. “Go upstairs and check on him. A sick pup is no joke.”
Cassian caught her wrist. “Come with me.”
Trista shook him off. “The kid needs bloodwork and scans. I’ll just be in the way. Move fast and get him to a doctor.”
Algernon was the permanent obstacle between Cassian and Samantha.
No matter how much Cassian tried to lie to himself, he couldn’t switch off his protective fatherly instincts.

Cassian saw that “generous” yet freezing cold look on Trista’s face again. He frowned, his grip on her hand tightening.
“Trista, I know it sucks that she’s calling me right now,” he said. “But the kid is innocent. I can’t just ignore him.”
He’d just sworn to keep those two out of their hair, and not even ten minutes later, Samantha’s SOS had shattered the silence.
Cassian was convinced that Trista was dying inside, suffering through some extreme emotional backlash.
While they were in a deadlock, Samantha’s call suddenly rang on Trista’s phone.
Trista didn’t skip a beat. She answered and said calmly, “Don’t panic. I’m sending him upstairs to get you guys right now.”
She hung up and pushed Cassian toward the door.
Cassian stood there like he was glued to the floor, staring at her with a heavy expression. “Trista…
… you promised me. No more talk of mating severance. No more games.”
Trista looked down, perfectly hiding the mockery in her eyes.
“Your son is sick,” she countered. “As your Luna, I’m telling you to go check on him. How is that playing games?”
Cassian gripped her hand, his eyes searching hers. “Then tell me this: when did you and Samantha get so close? Since when do you two have this kind of ‘mental connection‘?”
Trista scoffed. “Cassian, Algernon’s life might be on the line and you’re obsessing over this? Are you out of your mind?”
Cassian’s face darkened as he pressed her. “He gets sick, she skips over me to call you, and you’re practically throwing me into her arms. When did you two become so ‘in sync‘?”
Trista played the guilt card. “If things were as innocent between you and Samantha as you claim, you wouldn’t be so paranoid about me having a female friend. The more you try to ‘avoid‘ her, the guiltier you look.”
That shut him up. His Alpha aura completely stalled out.
Only when Samantha called his phone for the third time did he finally leave, his face like a thundercloud.
The second he was gone, Trista dialed Isaiah.

A few minutes later, Isaiah was at the door.
Trista led him straight into Cassian’s study. “I know you’re a world–class hacker,” she said, pointing at the laptop. “I need you to brute–force every encrypted file on this machine.”

Isaiah leaned back in the chair, haggling like a pro. “Trista, helping you ‘betray your mate‘ is a lot of work. What’s in it for me?”
“Next time you come to the healing center, I’ll skip the unnecessary tests and save you some serious medical bills,” she offered.
Isaiah rolled his eyes, unimpressed.
Trista was starting to sweat. “Okay… I’ll buy you a high–end dinner?”
Isaiah smirked, taking his shot. “Only if I’m allowed to come over here for dinner whenever I want–mostly just to piss off your arrogant mate.”
Trista shoved him into the office chair. “Deal!”
