Chapter 238

Trista’s POV

I pushed the glass of water away, my guard up.

That powder was a heavyduty black market supplement, specifically engineered for hightier Alphas. It was potent as hell and had zero antidote.

For a useless screwup like Samantha to drop it right at Cassian’s feet was peak stupidity.

Cassian looked like a total gentleman on the outside, but underneath, he was the most calculating predator.

If he wanted payback, spiking my water would be the first thing he’d do.

I held my breath, watching his face for even a flicker of a microexpression or a spike in his pheromones. While he watched, I grabbed a brandnew glass from the cabinet, scalded it three times with boiling water, and finally filled it myself.

The moment I raised the glass, Cassian’s bottomless, wolfish eyes locked onto me. He slowly set his own drink down, not saying a single word.

My mind started racing. Logically, Samantha would’ve pinned the whole thing on me to save her own skin. The fact that Cassian hadn’t bared his fangs the second I walked inand was instead being this patient-was a massive red flag.

I was dying of thirst, but I forced myself to set the glass down. I didn’t dare take a sip.

I decided to head for the shower instead, anything to escape the suffocating Alpha pressure radiating from the living room.

Cassian sat on the sofa, not even looking up to stop me.

When I came out of the bathroom, he had moved into the study, the lights glowing dimly.

I crept back toward the bar, staring at the water dispenser. I stood there for a long time, but I just couldn’t risk it.

We both knew neither of us kept sodas or juice in the house. Aside from the milk for Algernon, there wasn’t a single thing to drink in the fridge.

I grabbed a sealed bottle of milk and had just twisted the cap when I heard his heavy, rhythmic footsteps behind me.

I met his dark, abyssal gaze, my palms starting to sweat. I silently twisted the cap back on,

sealing it tight.

I played it cool, looking down at my phone to text Isaiah for a favor

I waited by the door until that idiot showed up with two factorysealed bottles of mineral water. Only then did I feel safe enough to crack one open and chug half of it right in front of Cassian.

Late that night, we lay in the massive master bed.

Even with my back to him, I couldn’t sleep, listening to the steady, even rhythm of his breathing.

Tonight, I had literally orchestrated a hit on him in front of the whole pack, and the plan had gone up in flames.

Yet, from the moment I stepped through the door until now, he hadn’t asked a single question. He hadn’t even given me a dirty look.

The more I thought about it, the more this deathly silence felt like the calm before a very violent storm.

The next morning, I got ready for my shift at the healing center.

Paisley, the omega who handles the housework, gave me a polite nod by the dining room. Breakfast is ready, Luna Trista.”

I saw Cassian in front of the mirror, meticulously picking out a tie, so I headed to the dining room alone.

I finished half a bowl of oatmeal and grabbed my bag to leave.

I had just reached the foyer when Cassian’s hand shot out. His fingers were cold as ice as they clamped around my wrist.

Paisley,Cassian called out, his voice flat. Go back for the day. We don’t need you here.

Paisley obeyed instantly, shedding her apron and disappearing out the door.

The second she was gone, I wrenched my hand away. Whatever you have to say, say it when I get home. I’m going to be late.

Cassian stared at me, his expression unreadable. I called the healing center. I took the liberty of requesting a day off for you.

Who the hell gave you the right to call my job?I snapped. The anxiety I’d been suppressed all night finally boiled over into pure rage.

Cassian just watched me. His dark brown eyes shimmered with a predatory glint in the dim light, like he was observing a prey animal thrashing in a trap.

He didn’t say a word, but his Alpha scent began to coil around the room, heavy and oppressive.

Suddenly, a wave of dizziness hit me out of nowhere. My wolf let out a terrified whimper in the back of my mind, and my vision began to fracture.

I stumbled back, my fingernails clawing at the glass door of the dining room, making a horrific screeching sound.

Deep inside my body, a dark, searing heat began to surge.

Driven by the drug, the wolf inside me started to howl in a frantic, primal haze, craving a male’s touch.

I whipped my head around to look at the halffinished bowl of oatmeal on the table. I stared at Cassian in total disbelief. Youyou put it in the food?

Cassian stepped forward, his hand clamping onto my shoulder like a steel shackle.

He looked down at me, his voice devoid of warmth but laced with a terrifying, absolute control. The only way you’ll ever learn your lesson is to feel exactly what it’s like when your instincts are ripped wide open.

I tried to shove him away, fueled by a mix of shame and fury, but my arms had already turned to jelly.

Trembling, I tried to activate my comms stone to call Fred for help. Before the array could even light up, Cassian snatched it from my hand.

For the first time, I saw the bloodred rage of a True Alpha burning in the depths of his pupils.

The drug hit my bloodstream like molten lava. My bones felt like they were melting. And because of the lingering mating bond between us, my body began to shamelessly crave the scent of cold pine radiating from him.

I could only grab the lapels of his robe, my voice breaking into a suppressed, desperate whimper. Get meget me to the healing center. My wolfshe’s losing control!
