Third Person’s POV

First thing in the morning and some low–life stranger felt bold enough to walk all over her.
Samantha finally snapped. She gripped the steering wheel and let out a series of raw, jagged screams into the empty car.
“Just you wait,” she thought. “Once I break that bond, once Cassian and I are official and I’m the Luna of the strongest pack in this territory, nobody will ever look down on me again!”
Sunset. Blue Bay Apartments.
Samantha timed it perfectly, lurking in the shadows near Cassian’s place.
As soon as she saw his car pull into the spot, she shifted into “damsel” mode, stumbling out to meet him.
Cassian climbed out of the car, looking exhausted, and immediately caught that cloying, sweet scent in the air.
He frowned, his eyes landing on the angry swelling on her face. “What happened to your face?”
Samantha looked at him like he was her only hope in the world. She covered her cheek, her voice trembling like a leaf in the wind. “Cassian… Alaina called yesterday. She said she missed the kid, so I took him over. I swear… I didn’t mean to get between you and Trista.”
Cassian’s expression soured instantly, his eyes sharpening into blades. “Did you see Trista?”
“No, I didn’t go looking for her!”
Samantha shook her head frantically, tears welling up. “Things have been so messy at home. I’ve been so anxious I haven’t slept in days. I was worried my depression was coming back, so I went to the healing center for my meds… and I ran into her in the parking lot.”
Seeing Cassian remain silent, Samantha kept sobbing. “She saw us together last night, and she totally misunderstood. She threw a stack of cash in my face in front of all her coworkers. She said some horrible things… she even said that if I ‘serviced‘ you well enough, she’d pay me a bonus.”
Cassian’s pheromones spiked. His jaw tightened into a hard, cold line, and the claw marks on his forehead from the night before began to throb.
“What else did she say?” his voice was low, vibrating with suppressed tension.

Samantha really turned on the waterworks. “She called me a pathetic homewrecker. She said you were unfaithful… She said she’s been over this mating for a long time and can’t wait to cut
you
off. She said she never wants to see you again. She even cursed you, saying you should never come home.”
“Enough,” Cassian said, closing his eyes.
“Cassian, Trista was just pretending to be my friend. She just wanted to humiliate me.”
Samantha grabbed the hem of his jacket, looking up with her tear–stained face. “Today at the hospital, she stood by and let some low–class thugs beat me up. Everyone saw it. You can check the cameras if you don’t believe me…”
She dissolved into total despair. “Your pack hates me, your mate hates me, and even random rogues on the street want to bully me… Cassian, what did I do wrong? Why is Moon Goddess punishing me like this?”
Cassian looked down at her, watching her practically collapse from the “effort” of crying.
That cloying, submissive scent made his wolf growl with a strange irritation.
He reached into the car, grabbed some tissues, and handed them over. “Go home,” he said, his voice stiff but polite. “I’ll talk to her and get the truth.”
Samantha caught the flash of darkness in his eyes and knew she’d won. She wiped her eyes, acted suitably subdued, and left.
Cassian stood in the cold evening air for a moment, his thumb mindlessly brushing over the unhealed scratches on his brow.
He pulled out his comm–stone, channeled his power, and pinged Trista.
Trista had just stepped onto Shadowfang territory when the stone vibrated.
Cassian’s voice cut through immediately–the cold, accusatory tone of an Alpha. “Is there a reason you can’t just talk things out? Did you really have to humiliate her in public like that?”
Trista was floored. The sheer absurdity of being blamed for something she didn’t do made her realize she didn’t even want to argue.
She swiped her finger across the stone, cutting the connection and letting his annoying voice vanish into the wind.
Minutes later, at the Shadowfang packhouse, Trista and Dr. Halsey traded a grave look.
She took a deep breath, pushed open the heavy oak doors, and stepped into a room vibrating with raw, violent energy.

Alistair was sitting in a wheelchair by the floor–to–ceiling window.
He was wearing sharp black trousers and a deep crimson V–neck suit over a silk black shirt, left unbuttoned halfway down his chest. Even in the shadows, the lines of his chest muscles looked tight and explosive.
He had a face that was deep, dark, and almost sinister.
A tiny, burning red mole sat just below the corner of his eye, giving his icy expression and arrogant gaze a strange, seductive edge.
If you had to judge him by wolf instinct alone, only one word came to mind: Feral.
Even in a wheelchair, he radiated a danger that suggested he could snap a prey’s neck in a heartbeat.
Alistair’s eyes, sharp as a hawk’s, locked onto Trista. “So,” he drawled. “You’re Cassian’s famous… Luna?”
