**by Evan Holt Crane**
**Chapter 43**
**The Heartbroken Luna’s Choice: Banish Love**

**Cassian’s POV**

Upon my return to Ironthorn House, I cradled her gently in my arms, ascending the staircase to the second floor as if I were carrying a fragile piece of art.

She felt almost ethereal, as if she were a delicate banner that had just been lowered from the Stone Circle, the remnants of a gentle breeze whispering through the fabric.

My phone buzzed incessantly in my pocket, a persistent reminder of the obligations that awaited me.

With one hand firmly grasping her wrist, I fumbled for my phone with the other, my voice barely above a whisper. “I had a meeting scheduled this morning with Mr. Thomas from Syncred Group, and I completely missed it. Just give me a moment to gather my thoughts, and I’ll call him back.”

But her reaction was swifter than I anticipated. In a flash, she snatched the device from my fingers and hurled it across the room, where it clattered against the wall.

Her gaze met mine, her eyes glistening with unshed tears, her breathing uneven yet somehow steady. “If you want me to stop making a scene, you need to have the pack doctor bring the contraceptive wolfsbane potion.”

The weight of her words crashed over me like a tidal wave. She didn’t want my child.

She sought to completely eliminate that possibility, even if the odds were slim.

I found myself staring at the phone lying forgotten against the wall, hesitating to retrieve it.

I stepped closer, my grip tightening around her wrist as I lowered my voice, shifting my Alpha pheromones from a state of suppression to one of reassurance. “Even if Samantha and her son exist, they won’t threaten your status as Luna, nor will they impact the mating contract binding us.”

Her complexion was ghostly pale, a stark contrast to the turmoil brewing within her.

“It already has,” she replied, her voice taut as if stretched to its limits. “If it weren’t for them, my mate wouldn’t have missed our third anniversary. If it weren’t for them, he wouldn’t constantly abandon me only to play the role of ‘husband’ beside someone else. If it weren’t for them, he wouldn’t have publicly shamed me in front of my colleagues, leaving me humiliated.”

I pulled her into my embrace, feeling the tremors coursing through her body. My palm moved slowly along her back, attempting to offer her some semblance of comfort. “Trust me. I have obligations toward them, but not in the way you think.”

She shivered in my arms, her voice breaking. “You can’t possibly hold this many people in your heart. You’ve already declared your intention to take responsibility for them until the end, so just let me go. I’m willing to step aside for your happiness.”

The last words escaped her lips with great effort. “You know I love you. But forcing me to remain trapped in this suffocating mating contract—I will truly lose my mind.”

I tightened my grip, refusing to let her slip away. “You won’t. As long as you don’t dwell on the worst possibilities, we’ll be fine. We can revisit this conversation later.”

She closed her eyes, her voice low and resolute. “I’ll stop dwelling on the worst when you allow me to take the medicine.”

I weighed the implications of last night’s reckless encounter, the depth of her emotional fragility, and the shifting tides of public opinion within the pack in the blink of an eye. Finally, I nodded, understanding that this wasn’t a compromise but rather a step back from the precipice of despair.

I quickly Mind-Linked the pack doctor, who soon arrived at the villa with a test tube containing a dark green liquid.

I watched her as she brought the potion to her lips, swallowing the contents with a determined resolve. Then, I observed her lie down quietly, as if she were enveloped in a thin layer of tranquil water.
