Trista’s POV
I paused, not answering right away.

“Trista, I’m personally invested in your field–sleep therapy,” Xander admitted openly. “If you’re willing, I’d like to formally offer you a position at our Blade Pack’s private Healing Center.”
He paused, choosing his words carefully.
“Our center runs strictly by international standards. No pack, no family owns it.”
He added, “Not only will it give you a better career foundation, but I can promise you this: working there, nobody will ever challenge your decisions because of whose Luna you are.”
I felt his sincerity, but I didn’t commit.
I just gave him a sincere nod. “Thank you, Xander. I’ll reach out when I’m ready.”
He didn’t pressure me. He just smiled, shifted the talk back to research, and let me breathe.
The next morning, I went to the bank and purchased a stack of high–value gift cards.
Selling the obsidian cane was the absolute priority.
I needed the cash to have any power against Ironthorn.
If Cassian wouldn’t agree to terminate the mating, I’d have to take him to the Werewolf Court, ready to burn my bridges with The Elder Council.
Following the address Xander gave me, I found the quiet apartment complex.
Just as I was about to walk in, a familiar figure appeared.
Samantha.
She walked out of the building carrying a small paper bag. Her scent was the same overly sweet omega aroma, lingering faintly in the air.
I instinctively frowned. I checked the address on the card in my

She froze for a brief second, then her expression smoothed into polite surprise, like running into an old classmate. Her comm–stone was in her hand, her finger quickly tracing runes across the surface–a subtle signal she didn’t bother to hide.
I didn’t need to get close to see the stone flash and dim. She was messaging someone.
It was almost certainly Cassian.
She walked toward me, a faint smile on her face, her tone falsely intimate. “Dr. Holmes, what a coincidence.”
I met her eyes, delivering a calculated shot. “Ms. Fernandez, you’ll address me as Luna Trista.”
Her smile visibly cracked.
Her face changed instantly, a flash of pure annoyance in her eyes.
I started to walk around her, heading into the building.
She stretched out her arm, blocking me. “Dr. Holmes, let’s cut the small talk.”
She deliberately repeated “Dr. Holmes,” her voice gentle, but her words were razor sharp.
“I may have been gone six years,” she said, “but Cassian and I? We never truly disconnected.”
I stopped and looked up at her.
“Then why,” I countered, “didn’t you come back to stop him when he mated with me?”
She raised her hand, pushing her permed hair back, a gesture as smooth as if she were at a cocktail party.
“You must know by now,” her voice softened with a fake sense of sorrow. “Cassian and I have a
son.”
She met my gaze, telling a story designed to wound.
“Cassian loves me. He loves our son,” she said. “I know he was forced to mate with you by the Ironthorn elders. He considered that mating a duty, and I understand the position he was in.”
My fingers slowly clenched in my palm.
“If you understand,” I asked, “why did you come back now?”
She smiled, a mix of faux innocence and iron certainty.
“Cassian said he felt bad for us, living abroad.”
